Help! what can i do to get better fuel mileage out of my truck
I checked my fuel mileage to day on my CTD truck and let me say i thought it really sucked. i got right at 15.0 MPG. that was with my TST on 1-0 and driving 65-70 mph. here is a brake down off my truck.
04.5 CTD 325-600 48re 4x4 four dour SB
here is what all i have done to the truck.
TST
MBRP 4 inch muffler, still has stock cat
swiss cheese stock airfilter houseing with a green airfilter.
ok my question is what can i do to my truck to get better fuel mileage if any or am i just screwed big time.allso i have not towed anything with my truck. so i am really scared to see what it will get. it really makes me mad that i traded in a 04 CTD 305-555 six speed that got 21-22 highway miles and 16 towing my race car.which i could probly get back but my new truck is a lot nicer. so besides what you guys can come up with. i was wondering if i installed a ATS converter would that help mileage any. but i planed to get one anyway.was just wondering if anybody did a converter change and saw a mileage increase.allso who on the board here sells ATS converters and who has the best price on one.if you need to pm me please do. thanks
allso in case anybody is wondering. i checked my oil and it is right on the full mark and no diesel smell, fuel filter changed not long ago.allso it seems like my milage has went down alot from the heat. i bought this truck with 29,000 miles this march and i swore when i checked it i was getting right at 18 MPG.i have put less than 200 miles on my truck and i am allmost to a half tank.when i got the 15 mpg number i had 365 miles on the dash with 1/4 tank left. so what do you guys think. go get my 04 back or just shut up and quit crying about it. Thanks Bobby Miller

Shut up and quit crying, Bobby!!!
The converter will probably help your mileage a little as will some injectors. Both are a little costly though. 15 mpg isn't bad if it's combined mileage. You should really check it for a few tanks before getting so discouraged. With all I've done I am getting just shy of 17 in mostly city driving. I think that's better than the average which I believe is around 15. So, what I think I'm trying to say is, that mileage is normal for your truck.....

ok i will stop crying lol . but it looks like your truck is makeing a lot more power than mine.but allso it seems like every time i check my fuel mileage it keeps getting worse.but i guess it was a big shock going from a truck that got 21-22 mpg down to 15 mpg.other than me crying about the sucky fuel mileage this truck has been great. but wanted to say thanks for the info. allso for got to say the tank before this one. i had the tst on 3-3 same driving habits i got around 14.2. allso would like to hear what other 04.5 auto CTD truck guys are getting. thanks everybody Bobby Miller

I have a 04.5 W/ edge juice, mac intake, dual 5" stacks no cat and no muffler. its also an auto. I have the 4:10 rear that makes looking for MPG as easy as landing on mars! With all the junk I put on I maybe got about an extra mpg or so. I average 15.5 to 15.8 combined. So here is how I made myself feel better. I know that driving around town I get low 15's, that is what its always gonna end up saying. I also went on the highway an got up to speed and at different speeds reset the computer. So I can get about 20 or so at 65 mph. so I get good mileage on the long hauls. once you go to the start and stop routine, its always gonna make you feel stupid with the 15mpg reading. whaddya think?

A/C is gonna kill your mileage, especially around town. Just wait till you tow heavy.
It looks like you have all the necessary mods to get better than stock mileage.
Like Keyser says, don't even bother looking at the overhead, just drive in a fashion that suits your style. What it is, is what it is.

I wouldn't put much into what the overhead says period. Check it mathmatically. I do however use the overhead to see what driving styles seem to make the number higher. I have found with my 3.7 gears that anything over 65 MPH starts to hurt mileage. The best I get is at 65 MPH with TST on 2/1 I have gotten 22.

again thanks for all the great info guys.i have all ready had the white smoke reflash done about 3 months ago. after that now my over head allways reads around 19.5 to 21.0. which i knew was way off. but i did not know it was that far off. lol the most i have pulled sofar with it was around 6000 pounds. the truck did great and you could not even tell the car was back there. but i never checked the mileage that time.i am thinking about doing the switch to make the converter lock up when i want to. because when i get on the army base that i work on. it is only 35 mph for around 5 miles and my converter never locks up.allso you are right. i have been useing the A/C non stop lately. that has got to have something to do to it.Right now i am looking to get a better lock up converter for it allso.I like the ATS converter but it is a lot off money. I emailed Goerend Brothers about one of there converters. but i will probly not hear anything from them for a couple of days. does anybody know what one of there converters cost. I guess i am going to have to tape up my mileage window so i can not see it any more, then i can quit crying about it then. thanks for all the help. Bobby

On the way to get a TS Performance Products module installed on my 05, I got 18 MPG, on the way home, I got 24 MPG, I've been as high as 26.5 with no load. I can get 11 with a 19K+ 5th wheel.

One thing that has kept my "city" mileage down is the fact that here in Orlando, there is a stoplight at almost every block. Sitting at a light just kills mileage. Thats what keeps me around 14-14.5 in town.

is the tst a timing box?if not maybe a timing module will help you, also maybe some injectors will help, when i put injectors in i gained 2 mpg and another 2 with the smarty timing,i see 22-24 in town driving, but im pretty easy on it during the week cause i pay my own fuel and use the truck for work.

yes i got the same thing as you only a 6spd was really sad when i bought this truck because of the milage but once i got passed it i started to get over the mpg thing with each mod i did . volant cai. 4 inch straight piped ,edge juice/attitude with a pillar mount, 15.2sec in1/4 averaging 18 on over head nothin more to complane about just how to make it faster and faster!

Well, theoretically a good converter and the right cam will help mileage. I can say honestly that it did in my case. 1.5 to 2.0 mpg after those mods. However from a financial perspective you would have to drive the truck for the next decade to recoup the cost of installing them.
I like the advise given by Keyser!
Driving style and the AC are the biggest contributors to any individual vehicle's mileage JMHO.
