Help me pick a turbo.

Hey all,

I've been thinking of upgrading my stock turbo to something a little better, and I'm having trouble deciding what I should go with. My mods will be pretty much limited to the Smarty, and a set of 25hp injectors for mileage, I figure the Smarty turned up is about as much as I'm going to want. I had a line a while back on an HTT 62/12, but it fell through, so I am looking again.

So, now to decide what brand and size turbo to throw on. I've tried looking through BD's website, Industrial Injection, and HTT. I'm pretty sure I am looking for a smaller turbo, as I would like it to be close to stock in terms of lag, but from there, I am pretty well lost...I don't know what the different wheel sizes do, or anything like that. Looking on II's site, I had no idea what model or size I should even be looking at.

I tow a little bit, really nothing over 8K, and I like to fool around a little bit on the street, but no official drag racing, or sled pulling is in my future.

Can anyone give their opinion as to what will work well with the set up I've got?

Thanks for any help!

You would be pleased with a HTT 62/65-13ss, best of all worlds for an otherwise pretty stock truck. The Super B would be okay also, considering it is good to about 525hp.

Why do you want to upgrade? Do you have EGT issues? And the Super B would be a step sideways in my opinion.

Are you looking for a little more power? Do you want more turbo whistle? Are you looking for a shiny blink factor turbo?

In my opinion, the smarty and 25 HP injectors is within the airflow ability of the stock turbo.

Is your tranny built? If not, I would spend that turbo budget on a better torque converter and valvebody so you can put all of your power to the ground. Tranny mods will help out your fuel mileage as well.

Both of those are pretty reasonable.

Right now, I don't "Need" a turbo...I just know this one won't last forever, and I'm trying to figure out what one is the best option for my truck.

I have to keep an eye on my egts when I'm pulling, and you always like to get more power out of what you have.

My tranny is going to be getting a TQ, and new valve body this summer, which from what I've heard, will help out quite a bit getting power to the ground.

So, all in all, I am just trying to do homework to find out the best options for me.

Thanks for the help so far!

I have the BD SuperB turbo, and so far it's been great for what I'm wanting in a turbo, quick spool up, lower EGT's than stock, and I just got back from a 5000 mile trip towing around 9000lbs turbo made a world of difference from stock. From the brands your looking at I'm sure you can't go wrong, I wanted to upgrade to towing twins so I went with BD.

I just installed the PS 62/65/14 and I love it , I tow heavy and it works great and spools almost like stock and it also keeps the egt in check.

turbo

If you dont have an egt problem.... dont buy one... if you do? You will need to move a lot of air. I had the 62/13ss and it would not keep my egts down period, Twins is the only way..... after you drive a rig with twins and a lot of fuel you will think its well worth the money. That is what my next mod will be after my new tranny that is one stepfrom limp mode. Your stock turbo is tougher than you think..... just dont bark it too hard and roll in and out of the power. Mine has been hammered for 100k and still going! Nathan Wright from MPI is the best person i know to talk to about your wants and needs, and has an outstanding product, and no i dont have his twins.... yet....

That's weird the 62 didn't keep you cool, mine has done a great job in every way, I am really happy with its performance. I understand the theory of twins, but they aren't needed to have a decent running truck. Some ppl don't have the money or patience to deal with twins.

I have a HTT 62-65-14 and it's good. Drives the same as stock, but lower egts when towing.
