Help me eliminate 2000rpm drone

Here is the deal. I put a 5" turbo back system on my truck and I had a massive drone at 1500 rpms. It came with a 24" muff with an 8" body. Today I picked up a 51" nelson muff with a 9" body and put it on. Overall it is quieter at idle and cruising. But now I still have a massive drone between 2000-2300rpms. This is the only muffler I could find without a baffle in the middle. It wasn't that bad before because my truck is usually above 1500. But now anytime I accelerate or cruise at 70 it drones bad. I am about ready to put the stock system back on if I can't get rid of this drone.

I had the same problem at 2000 rpm with my 4" dual silverline. I put on a Magnaflow. It has no baffle and you can see straight through it. I know they dont make a 5". I bet if you went to 4" you would be just as happy with the performance and have no drone with the proper muffler.

Just a thought,...but before you trash your new system you might try adding numerous auxillary hangers on the system that are rubber insolated. I would think any big truck supplier would have these. Just my opinion but I'd think it is caused by vibration and would need more stabilization that what was provided to you in the kit. Good luck.

I have a straight pipe setup and had a drone prior to putting a turn down tip on it. I've known others who have also said the turn down tip helped. It's also a lot cheaper than trying to buy different mufflers - you should be able to get one for as cheap as $40 depending on the length and size.

Move the muffler forward or add/clamp some 2" angle iron to the pipe ahead of the muffler.
Let us know if it helps.

Was there much of a difference in power between the 4 inch and 5 inch exhaust? any other performance mods? to take advantage of the higher flow...

Exhaust

Change the system to a 4" such as the Banks system with the down pipe that replaces the cast elbow and the problem should be solved. You can also change to most any 4" system and install an Aeroturbine as far forward as possible and that will also help to eliminate drone as well and lower EGTs.

Well I fixed the problem. I noticed my tailpipe was vibrating at idle and I could feel it inside. I only had 2 hangers on one at the rear of the muff and one on the tailpipe. I didn't use the one in front of the muff because I changed it to a 51" straight through nelson muffler. So all I did is add one in front of the muffler and it fixed the 2000 rpm drone and vibration at idle. It is waaaaay quieter and has a nice low tone, barely noticable with the windows up. Not objectionable with the windows down, just sounds like I mean business. Total cost of $445 shipped for the 03-04 5" turbo back, $100 for the 51" nelson muffler. I have the 03-04 4" downpipe for sale for $100 shipped, I reused the stock 600 4" downpipe. E-mail me at davem326@juno.com if you want it.

Dave,
Where exactly did you mount this new hanger? I take it that you have it connected to the frame somewhere as opposed to that sorry stock trans mount? Seeing that your mod took away your 2000 RPM drone, I wonder if it might help some of us who have the dreaded drone as well, stock exhaust or not. Can you post a pic?
