Okay, so I've been thinking about this since I just put my fender flares on. Has anyone tried running a thin bead of clear or black silicone around the flares after you install them (especially if you taped behind them)?
When I put on my diamond plate rocker panels, which are real diamond plating and not the plastic crap, there were gaps at the front and back of the plates. I didn't want road grim getting in there so I ran a bead of caulk around and in the gaps (after taping everything off) and it looks outstanding. You can't see the caulk and it'll certainly keep all the grime out.
Thoughts?

I think the silicone might trap moisture in whatever you are sealing.
Might cause some terrible rust.
I would be fine if all that happens is the paint that you can't see rubs off.
Re-painting is easy...
Cutting out rusted sheetmetal

I had a 2002 Toyota Tundra. I took the flares off, when new, placed a layer of the 3M around the wheel well and placed the flares back on. My brother now owns the truck and recently had to repair one. The 3M tape was still in good condition and absolutely no wear through. I just did the same when I put on my Power Wagon flares. I don’t expect to have any problems.

No...I don't.
Mine are loose as heck with the three or four screws that hold them on.
I think them being loose is what causes them to rub the clear and base off though.
Probably by design...you don't want moisture to get trapped behind them, and I would think that if you silicone them, that is what you are going to get.
