Heavy Duty 48RE
I just had a "Heavy Duty" 48re installed by my dealer under warranty. They told me that their supplier was back-ordered on the regular 48re and that as a result I was getting a heavy duty factory remanufactured one for no additional cost. .
It has a heavy duty TC - it looks to be twice the size of the stock one. Upgraded VB plus a number of other upgrades. I was planning on an upgrade after the warranty was up on my original tranny, but when it self destructed and I got this one instead......I guess I can't look a gift horse in the mouth!!!
Does anyone here know what after-market parts they use and how well this unit holds up?

Here is info on the tranny from a Dodge brochure:
Some features of Mopar’s 48RE Heavy-Duty transmission that make it stronger and more durable than conventional transmissions include:
• Improved timing and flow reduces converter overheating, and decreases the occurrence of TCC shudder.
• A heavy-duty throttle valve kit restores throttle valve control, so the transmission will not hang in gears as long, or be as sensitive to downshifting under load.
• Front servo piston cover designed with an o-ring to ensure hydraulic seal of direct clutch oil.
• Intermediate shaft plug kit improves lube flow and reduces internal temperatures.
• Upgraded stator support bushing material improves durability.
• High-energy front and rear clutch for increased clutch capacity and firmer shifts.
• Each unit includes a heavy-duty torque converter to maximize durability.
Mopar’s 48RE Heavy-Duty transmission also includes several features not found on conventional transmissions, including:
• Turbine stiffener plate to eliminate hub cracking.
• Kevlar reverse band allowing for higher torque capacity.
• Billet front cover to eliminate converter ballooning.

too bad this isn't the standard issue transmission... sad that the cost to Dodge is probably not more than a couple hundred bucks... but I guess it all adds up... thanks for the info...

DTR's 'Go to Guy'
Suggested retail for the RH103351AC, which is an 03-04 4x4 is $4,991.67 . Not that much cheaper than a built tranny! If I were under warranty and needed one, I'd ask to upgrade, but out of warranty , I'd get an Goerend's or DTT or HTP whatever you want.

No way would I in a million years pay diamler that kind of money for a I would bet no matter what that list says a near stock 48re tranny with upgraded kevlar bands and clutches or high performance mopar package as they call it. I would just get built one if I had to pay that.

The "Heavy Duty" tranny is meant to be sold as an upgrade when someone is replacing a bad tranny. The cost is an extra $800 to 900. The brochure describes is as meant for owners who do heavy hauling.
