Hear is cyl number one out of my budys truck. The top ring was broke and the piston was broke in between the center ring and oil ring.

By the looks of everything, we think when the top ring broke it caused the piston to prob push against it harder and cockiing the piston. Then it put pressure on the rest of the piston.

How bad did the ring tear up the cylinder. IF its not too bad a hone job may get you by but I wouldnt risk it and just resleeve it and put another standard piston back in it and only be in the whole your labor and no more then $450 with another standard pistion and the cost of resleeving it at a good machine shop.

I have a photo of a brand new, never installed CR piston that has a casting defect in this area. It is a more common problem than many think. The cooling duct that is cast into the piston is the weak link in manufacturing.

The cooling duct also weakens the part and CR pistons should never be used for rebuilds on any engine other than a CR. I was appauled when I saw the use of CR pistons in 12 valve engines and this thread helps to get the point across.

The cylinger wasn't scratched up too bad, it does have a crack in the lower part of the cylinder that goes around, its about a centemeter long. A local shop sayed $200 for the machining of the block $40-$50 for the sleeve then we have to buy a piston.

What were the symptoms that instigated the tear down of the engine???

Yep that's about right piston at the dodge dealer will run you $150-200 and most have to get them from the warehouse and have them shipped in dont carry them in stock, also they have 3 grades usually grade A,B, and C. You should be able to get it all done for under $450-500 plus your time in labor. If you dont mind me asking did the dealer just overlook the truck being in their shop and not report to star and look the other way when you picked it up to do the work yourself or did they lock your vin for future reference.

We had a miss in one of the cylinders. Thought we had a bad injector

CReed; the dealer put a new injector in and told star it fixed the problem, they let us have the truck back.

common rail pistons are no longer graded in A B C any longer , they do have two grade of headgaskets that they use for different protrusion.

Nice it has been over a year since I last priced them this was back when my 03 gave me a scare.
Catdoctor: that is great that your dealer did such I would be sure to leave a couple $'s in his mailbox for being such a good sport about the situation.
