head studs

hey gang, anyone know if arp headstuds can be exchanged and torqued with the factory bolts on a one for one basis, without having to pull the head?

I Asked The Same Thing Not Too Long Ago And The Answer That I Got Was Yes As Long As You Didnt Need To Change The Gasket. I Was Told To Change Them Like A Tire Criss Cross So That You Dont Release The Pressure On The Gasket.

That's how we installed mine. Started in the center and worked radially outwards. Followed Don's instructions for the torquing values.

There are two choices for headstuds A1 at Haisley's and ARP's....You can replace them one at a time...you may have to grind some of the ARP's to fit the rocker cover. A1 makes a 12mm bolt.....the stock size that is as strong as 14mm studs.....ARP is soon to release a similar product. ks

the ARP 12mm that is gonna have the 14mm strength is going to be crazy expensive. im hearing $1300 a set i believe due to the high cost of the new alloy, and a small quantity...they will be for the SERIOUS HP pullers and racers only

Then I guess the A1's will be the way to go.....the same torque settings but less stretch for the torque and they are just about 20% over the standard 12mm. ks

So how much more torque over the current 125 ft lbs do you reckon the top of the block can take before we instigate warp?

Have you ever heard how much they tq those 14 MM's studs to? I think it was around 185 ft lbs. Not to mention the studs don't put nearly as much stress on the block as twisting a bolt in does.

yes, you have to redrill and tap the block and have to drill the holes out on the head also.

seems like a lot of work for not that much return, when 12 mm studs are holding just fine

I have a hard time believing that a 12mm from anyone even made from cryptonite is going to surpass the clamp load of what your basic A1 14mm can offer.

After thinking about it a while, there are other things to factor in as well.
Like:
Head walk, block flex, extra stability offered by a larger bolt etc. etc. etc.

Justin, Your right that a 14mm is the ideal but it can be a time consuming operation. A buddy got his drilled but was tapping them himself....gets the tap all the way in the last hole and ping....tap is broken off in the hole...Taps are harder than you think to get out when they break off at the top thread...a month later he finished the job. Luckily the tap broke off in a hole that had enough material to Helicoil in a 14mm insert...And now that is the strongest stud setup. I'm sure you can get the same clamp force with the 12mm but the other benefits are missing. ks
