Exclamation Head Gasket went

After talking to numerous people and do every test i can do with out pulling the head, I've determined the hd has blown out internally. I'm sure there are several reasons why it went but its impossible to to tell exactly what did it in. The twins didn't help the matter and pushed it over the edge on the first run with the twins at 60psi. Remember these trucks are not indestructable!! The mighty 3rd gen MLS gaskets do have there limitations and I found them and broke them. I think High drive pressures and high egt's contributed to this happening. My head has been studded for the last 11 months(since I installed the SB) and I have also done 3 retorques since the initial install to 129ft/lbs.

Well look at the bright side atleast you can get in their and fix her up right. Heck Ive been waiting for mine to go so I can get arp 625s and o-rings. I just hope it didnt do any damage to the block. I have heard that when you blow it between cylinders it can be a little more problematic. Well best of luck and I hope its just the gasket and you can get her fixed quick.

O-rings wouldn't hold up to very much pressure either. If he had enough to blow out the HG, it would likely have blown o-rings too. They're easier to do since no machining would be involved but, no where near as strong

Are you still coming out on Saturday? That really sucks.... I have been waiting for the N2O to pop my gasket but you know it will wait until the most inopportune time.

Chris is good people, he is going to bring the green "turd", his indestructible 24 valve. I think he is a better man than I, I would be all tore up.

I do believe and I wont talk for the man but Mr.Barber reccomended o's for DD and I think has them on his monster 03. Reguardless its been about a year since I talked with him and I have since gone broke, but he recommended ARP 625s and O rings for mine, and my set up can see 80+ if I wanted.

The permanent fix is a single wire o-ring and a marine gasket from a 12 Valve with good studs. You simply wont blow it out.

I pushed for this set-up and Tim agreed. Remember we were pushing the stock MLS gaskets out at 700HP. It is an insidious probem that you will not always notice or be able to tell is happening. When Tim went to the o-rings in his 06 truck, he was consistantly making 875 HP on Diesel and never had a gasket issue again. Once he decided to build his 04 ( 555 ) truck up he went straight to the same set-up. Now he is making over 1000 HP on Diesel and the gasket is holding very well. Actually Tim has done this to several other CR trucks and they have never failed either.

With several thickness' of the 12 valve marine gasket available, one can adjust compression ratios as needed without milling piston tops, etc.

Yep, my truck is one of those, I don't have the 625's though, I have the regular ARP's.

Don,
So from your experience will the regular 12mm ARP studs hold up fine with the proper gasket, ...possilby the marine (which one)? I am about to do my install of your injectors, cam, springs, head studs with Lazar Smith...in fact I believe you have my parts there at your shop from what Llyod told me. When you have a chance can you PM me with some details? I would need to check with Llyod on the status of my head studs before I go making any changes. Im not shooting for anything higher than 650-700ish....if that.

Thanks,

Makes me wonder if that is also why I am pressureizing my coolant so much!

Christian, that is the same thing my 06 was doing, spitting coolant into the overflow and leaking around the rad cap. Once o ringed correctly with no other changes all the coolant issues stopped.
Boss my 06 held over 875 hp with o rings and standard arp studs. I went with 625s on the 04 because I am running over 100 lbs of boost. Tim
