Got the Garmin Nuvi here and love it, put them in all of our vehicles. Went on a trip with a friend who has a TomTom and noticed the lack of information on his maps compared to the Garmin. Just my .02

I love my Garmin nuvi 350, small, completely portable, maps are very, very good. Has all the features, get the 650 if you want a little bigger screen, but the 350 is perfect for me.

Garmin Nuvi 750 here, she, yes we have a relationship, she's Australian, perfect accent, has saved my tale on a couple of trips where roads detoured, directions are spot on, very easy to download custom POI's through Garmin's links, easy to use, even has a built-in media player so you can download music or story books, and you can buy custom SD cards for different cities and it will act as a sort of tour guide, very cool for vacations.

Garmin Streetpilot C-580. Did a lot of (hours) of research. Can answer phone thru it. Finds cheapest gas prices with MSN, routes you around accidents ahead. (If you don't want to use your phone thru it get the C330). Love it, if it got stolen or something, I would order another one just like it. gpsmagazine.com ? is a good resourse. The Streetpilot has been around for years and has had several models with upgrades all along. I have a ? 7yr old Garmin Streetpilot I mounted on my GoldWing, worked great all over US. and Nova Scotia and other cities in Canada too. Never a problem with it. Good Luck.

In general garmin based units are expensive but work a little better. There are important variations even between their models, however. The higher end, say 600 series, has faster processing, more precise locating, and is quicker to reroute, high res screens, where the smaller 200 or 300 series are a little slower, sometimes can miss a turn especially in congested areas, sometimes gets confused by closely spaced parallel roads, and the software may lack a feature here and there. I have a 7200 in the truck because I need the big screen mounted where I can easily see it without diverting too much attention from the road.
The wife uses a Nuvi 650 because I think it currently is the best compromise, plenty of performance. My daughter uses a Nuvi 200W because, when she looses the $225 unit, its not going to be as painful as loosing some of the others It also works well but is noticeably slower and less refined than the 650.
I've been using GPS systems for 10-15 years and the Nuvi 650 is a sweet model.
For convenience you want all maps internally on flash, no hard drive or memory cards. You want as large and highest resolution screen you can afford. If you want to walk arround with it, get one with a battery. All brands have their quirks.

I have a Lowrance iWay 500c in my truck and a Kenwood with Garmin nav in the wife's 4Runner. Both work great. I'd say the Garmin is a bit easier to use, but I prefer the map detail (what is shown on the screen while navigating) of the Lowrance over the Garmin.
