Got my SPS66
Well I finally got a turbo. I bought JCLeary's 66 of the classifieds.
I know a lot of guys have helped me in my decission and I am sure you know who you are and I would like to say thanks.
Maybe my truck is differant, maybe I am differant, but I know a lot of people said to get a 62 and I was goin to but JCLeary gave me a good deal on the 66 so I figured I would try it.
My time behind the wheel with it is limited and I have not towed with it but I love this turbo. The lag isnt even worth mentioning, it is almost non existant, and the smoke isnt bad at all either, very controllable.
I dont think there is a clear answer to wheather or not big turbos are better for manuals or autos but I wouldnt consider anything smaller than this turbo for MY truck now that I have it. This may change with time but as of right now it is flawless for my driving style. I couldnt be happier, with it.
I am not gona recomend a turbo this size to people with manuals just cause most will disagree and that is fine, like I said maybe this is a 1 time deal and I just lucked out, but if would say if you are considering a bigger turbo and you want to make big power I wouldnt hesitate. So far I have not had to "drive around" it at all. Personally though I would drive around it if I needed to just to make the power.
Thanks again to all those who have helped and thanks for the good deal on the turbo JC.

WAP, Now lets get a few miles on it. Good to hear it's working good for you. With your manual you will have no problem keeping that baby running smooth. Good Luck, KS

As a guy with a built auto and tight converter, I'm still having a hard time understanding how one can differentiate between using a larger turbo on a manual versus an auto. Can someone give me a straight-up answer?
Maybe it's because I haven't driven a 6-speed in a pickup?

im sure it has a little to do with how low geared the g56 trans is. but really any third gen with a good combo of fueling boxes should have plenty to spool the 66 series turbos. a set of injectors would help big time also.

I was told that with an Auto, the big 66 turbos have a surge problem at a certain sweet spot (1900) rpm that make them hard to tow with. For racing and empty driving it's ok cause you normally blow through the that rpm range

I ran an sps66 on my 05 and it was a nice turbo. I only ran it for a short time and traded the truck. It was on a 6spd trk and it made a huge improvement in egts, but it did surge some if you would go up a grade in a high gear. I dont know if I would put that same one on my auto, but It ran well.

With the stick you can avoid rpm zones where the turbo might veer off its efficiency map. With an auto....tight or not you get what you get and unless you want to tow in 3rd gear or drive 80mph you might have a harder time sometimes. ks

A auto with a tight converter will surge alittle when towing unless you can drive through it and not go over the speed limit in overdrive, where a 6spd you can downshift and power through the surge or just rev higher in a lower gear. I love that turbo, edited by admin.
