Gear Vendors Overdrive on NV5600
Just wondering if anybody is running these tranny "splitters" on 600's with the NV5600.
Very pricey add on but with a 22% reduction in RPM when engaged this sounds like a major fuel economy advantage when towing (with a 3.73 rear the engine should be about 1800 rpm at 70 MPH). Not to mention how cool it is to have an 11 speed truck!
Any feedback would be great! Thanks

Because the Gear Vendors unit is a re-engineered Laycock overdrive such as one would see on Austin-Healeys, Triumphs, MGs, etc. It does not like to be "reverse driven" - that is, it works fine when the engine is driving the rear wheels, but it is prone to slippage when the rear wheels are driving the engine (such as when an exhaust brake is in use). You either have to disengage it when using the exhaust brake or wire the exhaust brake such that it can't engage when the GV unit is activated.
The U.S. Gear unit was originally designed by Doug Nash using parts from the Ford T&C (top-loader) 4 speed. It's an all-mechanical unit that doesn't have any exhaust brake restrictions.

Correct me if I am wrong here...The Gear Vendor cannot be used in 4 wheel drive correct?
I doubt it would be a big concern for most people. However, If I have to run in 4x4 for some reason, it might be nice to have an extra higher or lower gear option in that circumstance too.

Scotty the US unit bolts between the transmission and the transfer case, thereby usable in 2 or 4wd. It is also stronger than the other unit, it has a much heavier load rating.

Look in issue 47 on page 162 , latest issue of TDR mag, for a article about Gear Vendors/US Gear. The best article I've read on the pros/cons between the two. The article is Dodge specific as the author is using '02 6spd. Need to read........JIM

One nice feature of the Gear Venders is it's designed to shift at full throttle. You split the gears without letting off at all. The US Gear can't shift till the power is off. But the US Gear can be used at any speed from rock crawling on up and the Gear Venders doesn't work till it has enough speed to generate oil pressure. The US Gear is probably more efficient because it's not hydraulic. Tough choice. If all you want is a higher gear and don't need the splitting, it may be better to go with taller tires.
