gas vs diesel mega cab

does anybody know the mileage differance betwwen the gas vs diesel when towing and empty? looking to buy a mega cab but i don't know if its worth it to spring for the diesel. most i tow is about 7500 - 8000lbs. also on a diesel how much is an oil change and fuel filter and is there any other maintenance?

Oil change for the diesel is about $40 in parts (3 gallons of oil and a filter).

Can help with the fuel mileage question. Good luck!

There is NO comparison. I drove a gas Megacab when they first came out because it was all that the dealer had, and you HAVE to go Diesel. ESPECIALLY if you tow. 8000lbs. is literally NOTHING to these engines but is a HELL of a lot for a gasser. Your MPG will suffer greatly if you do the gasser. Trust me, go DIESEL!

The biggest waste of money is the gas megacab! DON'T DO IT! The mileage is TERRIBLE. When I sold trucks I traded QUITE a few people out of their gas megacabs due to horrible mileage (between 9 and 12 NON towing) back into diesels.

We had an 06 with 6k miles on it that we had to GIVE away used because nobody wanted it.

Diesel oil change at local dealer is $100. Delo motor oil is cheap at Costco. I think fuel filter is about $8. Mileage on my 6spd manual Mega is 17.5-18.5mpg with modified injectors.

My last 2 trucks were gas V-8's, I will never buy another gas truck. The OEM milage on mine wasn't great, but after the Banks six gun I had a ton of power and my milage went up ALOT. I pulled my 25' enclosed trailer with 6 motorcycles to North Carolina at about 14mpg, that's about what my friend got out of his Hemi empty before he traded it in due to horrible fuel milage. That's also why they are givving away gas trucks and the diesel's are still holding their value. But I'd buy one now before all the new emissions crap shows up.

If your talking about the 5.7 liter Hemi then RUN!! I've got one in my 06 Jeep Commander, the best I can get out of it is 13.5mpg, my wife just sqeezed 14 out of it w/ lots of highway driving. As far as pulling my boats, it's ok, but it is alot of strain on the Hemi. Always shifting up and down, and milage might be an honest 9-10mpg. Why is this even a question if you tow, thank us later and bight the bullet

Like you had asked, most oil changes are around 40 dollars (3 gallons plus oil filter) The gas filter is around 10 bucks, depending on brands. So about 50 dollars for a service.

The gas mega cab you ain't gonna have to change the fuel filter, or anything like that, and the oil filter, problablyl around 20 bucks (if that).

The big majority is what you are going to do with it. if you only tow 5% of the time gas will come out ahead financially, if you tow a lot, diesel will come out ahead. With the price of gas 50 cents cheaper than diesel, it's hard to ever catch up, even if you get 2mpg less than diesel.

Just like the question in a different post, I had a V-10 and loved it. While I did haul and go to school it was much more efficient than the diesel. I couldn't plug the truck in so it was easier on the engine than the diesel, I also made short trips, and it warmed up faster. Again while most of us yahoo's on here use our trucks for fun and crazyness, some use it for functionability. So depending on what your using it for, weight the options, do the math and find out what you need.

I think most mega cabs are gonna do similar to a long bed truck (not too much weight difference. I'm getting around 16-17mpg consitantly. On empty runs I've seen up to 19.5mpg, towing right around 14mpg (5,000lbs) in the mountains. Depends on what your doing and all that. I can say the diesel will tow 8,000 lbs a lot better than the gas engine will.

Hope this helps.

On a side note, also when people post there millage numbers, in addition to city/highway, ask them at what speed. I can get over 19 if I'm 55 or under on the highway, but if I'm at 65 I get 18, over 65 around 17. A lot has to do with wind resistance. People that post I get 10mpg in a hemi, I dont' think are toting around town, but flat footing lights.

Don't laugh, my fiancee has a mercury sable and was getting 13mpg. Once I rode with her I realized why, I'm like you drive like your car is either wide open, or brakes. She's now getting 23mpg just by chaing her driving habbits.

So millage has to do with say 60% truck, 20% driver 20% weather conditions (wind, snow, rain, pressure, ect)

yeah but it is biased for good reason. gasoline engines are not the way of the future anymore. go diesel and never look back. we all did.
