Gagues, what they tell us.

Gagues, what they tell us.
Before I spend the bucks and time to put in the gagues I want, other than they look cool and are fun to watch, just what are they going to tell me that I need to know to avoid a breakdown. I have a stock '03 SO with an auto. The truck is really stock. I do tow a TT, about 7500 lbs on vacation. I plan on putting in a EGT, trans temp, and boost gague. This may sound dumb but just what should I be looking for as to limits on these? How much is too hot? Boost, what should I see there? I see some install fuel preasure and others. Will they really give advanced notice of failure?

If you are going to be leaving it stock, all I would put on it is a EGT gauge. Most people say to back off at 1400. Pre turbo. I have seen 1600 many times for a short burst. Although I have a 04.5 I think they can take a little more heat than the 03.
As for as boost goes, your wastegate is not going to allow it go to high. You should probably see around 25 - 30psi stock. And if you add a chip, most say around 35 - 40psi on a stock turbo.
And if you are wanting to do a third gauge I would do a fuel pressure gauge. Not sure what you should see stock. But I do know that if it pulls down to 0 then you have problems.
Hope I helped, Brad

on a stock truck skip the boost guage and get fuel pressure gauge, then you have a baseline of what your fuel press. is, if the pump goes south you may be able to catch it before it lets you sit out in the sticks somewhere

I put in three gauges when mine was completely stock. I have the trans gauge but I should have put in the fuel gauge. I did add the fuel gauge later. The fuel for the 04.5 and up is 8 and can go down as low as 0. You'd be surprised at high the egts can climb while towing. It is nice to know when to back off a little. The down side is that one tends to fixate on these gauges.
