Failed Emissions:Smarty sw#0

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I had to have an emission test for the first time in Spokane County. My truck was exempt for the first five years, today was it's birthday(5yrs).

I was hoping they would just plug their equipment in and check for codes, like they do for most cars, no such luck. In anticipation of a more thorough test, I set my TST to 0/0, and my Smarty to "0", half power, when you have to make sure NO SMOKE is produced!

You are allowed 40% Opacity, Dodge blew a 53%, after about 10 tries at their "Snap Test".

Now let me be very clear on this, I am not blaming Smarty in any way!

I believe the combination of my injectors (75hp extrude honed F1's), the slow spooling II Silver62 (no fuel), two stroke oil, and my EZ on 3, I know, I should have set the EZ to 0, I was thinking pressure only, but because of it's boost fooling, it probably gives it more fuel, when thats the last thing I needed right then.

The bottom line is, it FAILED, cannot get my license renewed until it passes. Any ideas? Maybe Bob has a "super weak" program he can email me, Bob? I was really counting on the sw#0, but it was smoking on take off, on my way there, I also noticed my "stock" setting smokes fairly heavy also.

I just performed a "boost leak test" this morning, no leaks @ 50psi, I did blow the "apparatus", (that I copied from page 30, issue 58TDR), off my turbo and dented my oil filter, that's another story (you have to make some minor mods on that "apparatus", to make it work on a 3rd gen).

Any thoughts would be appreciated, Jess

They emissions test there in Spokane? Wow.. We don't even have emissions testing where I live.

I think the EZ on 3 may have hurt you. Depending what version of TST you have it has a rail pressure setting that lowers the rail pressure which may help as long as it doesn't go too low.

I figured Smarty on half power should have helped though.

Maybe I'm just not looking at this in the right way,
but what's Smarty got to do with you bogartin' the test?

The above statement is not mine.

You are absolutely right about the title of the post, I included "Smarty" for two reasons, #1 it gets attention, #2 the "sw#0" is touted as ZERO SMOKE,

I put it to the test.

On a stock truck it most likely works as programmed, all you folks out there with "mods", be warned. I am just alerting the people that are subject to emissions testing, that other factors can/will change the results. If like me, you are relying on the "valet"(sp) setting, Don't!

I am not sure what bogartin' implies? Did I cheat? Did I purposely fail? NO!

I am a 100%, completely satisfied consumer of "SMARTY". Bob, especially Bob, and Marco have went far beyond anyone else out there. And I have to believe, they value constructive criticism(sp).

As the powers that be, get more power, this sw#0, is going to be more and more in demand! Do you hear me Bob?. Right now, it is just california/washington(libs) mandating emissions testing in the west (more freedoms too lose to follow), your next!

I believe you are right about the EZ, I was thinking pressure, but boost fooling probably hurt me.

Enumclaw: Emission testing from king county, headed your way.... (they(the dems)need more tax $s)

I would think the higher pressure would atomize the fuel better and result in a cleaner burn? I live in unincorporated weld county...no emissions :-)

Yes! higher pressure would do that, but EZ also does boostfooling, changing the timing map route, so it "suggests low boost", ecm gives more fuel, to raise boost, and smoke!

I really believe the EZ is what got you. Every pressure box I have tried smokes when set to kill (level 3)

40% is still a rather high amount for opacity. Maybe you should have had everything cranked up and you could have plugged up the machine. A small shot of N2O would have cleaned that opacity right up.

If they gave you 10 chances why didnt you turn the EZ off? I am not trying to criticize you, just trying to understand. I believe sniff testing is right around the corner here for me and I would like to make it pass.

Ok so as a quick test this morning after getting my blown turbo/manifold gasket fixed from yesterday I unloaded smarty to stock. I have Flux 2's and a Stg 2 Floorit cp3 on this truck.

With my EZ on 1 (didn't want to completely remove it) I did a couple of snap the throttle test and i didn't get any smoke. Thats with my HTT 62/71/13ss.

When they were doing the test were they flooring the throttle and letting off or like blip blip blip thing?

I have an old EZ, really did not have the opportunity to pull it apart and change jumpers.

To the floor and let off, I believe I will put a block of wood under my pedal and test for smoke, should be able to acheive rpm's without WOT.

That should work. Thats really creative, I would never have thought of that. I would think 50% travel would get you to 3200RPM.

What about using biodiesel for the test? Would that help or hurt?

Make sure your air filter is clean. Maybe even clean your compressor as the more air you get in the better you will be.

You could also move to CdA and commute to Spokane. No testing here!!!

Put your stock turbo back on for the test? Should spool faster and clear up any smoke.
