Exhaust brake ??

I've just bought the new 2006 Dodge Laramie 3500 6 speed diesel 4x4. I bought it to tow a very heavy 26 boat around British Columbia here where I live. We some pretty big hills in this area.
I can see the advantage of having an exhasut brake if I had an automatic trans but could someone tell me what big advantage there would be, seeings I have a 6 speed ?
Also what are the costs of getting one installed in the USA ? Might be cheaper to drive down and have one put in there if I do decide to go for it.
Pre thanks for any and all information.

It will do the same for your 6 speed as it does for the auto...and thats save your service brakes. It works great on my auto and will work better on your manual as you'll have no EB cutout under 20 mph. I've towed my rig (around 22K pounds CCVW) throughout your area and I can tell you the EB is something you'll learn to love. 6% grades and no service brakes required.

since you are in BC, contact pacbrake, they are up just on your side of the border. I have had one for 1 1/2 years and love it.

Exhuast valves

A chum says that the exhaust brake makes your exhaust valves burn out faster ?? I have no idea.

no, they will be fine,, do the pac brake pxbr, you wont regret it,, should be around 2g installed. You can get them at alot of places. Nice thing with a standard you dont have to put on a tq convertor lock up switch.

The reason that you need an exhaust brake is that a diesel engine does not brake well by itself compared to a gas engine.

Buy the factory jacobs off ebay for 700 bucks, take it to any diesel shop and pay for 5 hours of labor and there you go. I did it myself and it was pretty easy. could be into it for just over a grand.

Diesel engines control engine speed and power output by throttling the amount of fuel injected into the engine. A diesel has no air throttle. Because it has no air throttle, a diesel engine offers virtually no engine braking when the driver lifts off the accelerator pedal. There just isn’t a pumping loss to retard engine speed as the piston descends on the intake stroke. Air is free to enter the cylinder, restricted only by the flow capacity of the air cleaner, turbocharger compressor, intercooler, intake manifold, cylinder head port and intake valve opening.
An exhaust brake is a device that essentially creates a major restriction in the exhaust system, and creates substantial exhaust backpressure to retard engine speed and offer some supplemental braking. In most cases, an exhaust brake is so effective that it can slow a heavily-loaded vehicle on a downgrade without ever applying the vehicle’s service brakes.
Cost on this side ($USD) for 4" PacBrake PRXB + $950 + ~ $375-$450, parts + labor (thats a quote I received last week ~ looking to get one myself).

Wouldn't have been around $950 would it?

Have an appointment with pacbrake for Monday morning to get it installed. Managed to work out a pretty good price so why not. If the majority on here say that's the way to go, well lets get at it.
Will try it out on the big Pt Alberni hill over on Vancouver Island next time I go Salmon fishing.

I have had the PacBrake on my truck for about 2 years now and wouldn't own another truck without it. 58k on the truck and still on the original pads. I would definetly recommend the PacBrake to anyone thinking of getting an exhaust brake for their trucks.
