My 2 cents worth, do the hub conversion to a free spin, ball joints and u-joints then align it all at once. I did it and it's a chunk to spend but I figure it will be well worth it all in the long gun. My upper ball joints were already loose at 40K miles. Now I don't have to worry about when those OEM hubs will let me down and the little better mpg's is the icing on the cake.

There are several issues here , the shops long & short view of the job , many times the higher price may be the better job , you say you want just u-joints & ball-joints put in , no mention of miles on truck , run hard or not , the shop doing an estimate will probably have a chance to get that info .
A good shop , should take into consideration all & more , long term / less expensive view , any sign that the seals a leaking / how many miles , this is a fair amount of labor to do any of the above , and leaving out any one of the maintainance repair , means paying double to do again later , like 2/3rds of the seal job is already done when doing the ball & u-joints , a good shop will have that in mind when responding to your inquiry about the job and may not tell every detail in giving a quick estimate .
I've been in the repair bis for around 25 yrs. and to stay in bis [ training , tools ect. ] the labor rate has to reflect that [ higher ] , so when judging which bid to take , I would say look closely at the ones that are coming in at the 60-80% average , below that may mean your getting less quality and above may be charging too much .
You may want to put you location on your signature , a member may have a good recommendation .
Same goes with the parts , there can be a big difference in price / quality .

Just do it yourself!
You can buy a harbor frieght ball joint tool kit for 35 bucks that will last a few jobs before it bends/breaks. Use the power steering and blocks to push the hub out of the spindle...easy. PM me for the trick. 4 hr max job with a few barley pop breaks.

I did mine myself (48,000 miles) as mentioned above and the biggest B....H was getting the rotor off the hub, I think that alone was a 2 hr job. I believe the quote I received was somewhere around $1200 for 4 *****, 1 tie rod, and alignment. I decided to do it myself due to the fact I would know how to do it from then on and I would clean and grease everything for the future needs. Time well spent now just have to get to the other side. The othe rthing was I went and got a better deal on parts because I spent so much and evrything was lifetime warranty from NAPA (*****, U-joint, and tie rod).

I know I'm 2nd gen but I was quoted $775 with alignment for ball joints. I did them myself for $345 with alignment. They were Moog joints. If you decide to do them yourself look in the article section of this forum. There is a good writeup with pictures there. The socket and power steering trick works great to remove the hub. Also for the ball joint kit I used the tool checkout at Advance Auto Parts, $150 deposit. I know Autozone also has tools you can borrow.
