Edge EZ/ Towing/ No Guages (yet)

I posted this in towing and only got a couple of responses. Looking for more input. I am leaving Saturday morning...

I have a 235HP CA version CTD with about 10,000 miles. I just installed the Edge EZ box and I have a Westach combo EGT/Boost guage with the SRT-10 pillar on order. Unfortunately the guage kit is on back order, and I will not have it before my next tow through the desert. I am looking for tips from those of you with a similar set-up.

I am towing a 28' boat that weighs about 7500lbs from CA to AZ via HWY-15 and 40. I have made this trip many times without the Edge and it is no fun with an SO. There are a few steep grades. Can I safely set the box to level 1 or 2 and not be to concerned about EGT's?

BTW, the box on level 3 with no load is amazing. I purchase the box on E-bay for under $400 including shipping and received it within 3 days. I can't believe I waited this long to try it out. I am still concerned about warranty issues, but the gamble is worth it to me.

Thanks in advance, Mike

Mike, its about time you put a box on your truck....... I had my edge on my truck for about 6 months before putting gauges on. I always keep it on level 4 and had no problems with EGT's. But I do have the 4inch exhaust and Magnum Force AFE. I would think you should be fine on level 2 or 3. Just don't do 80 up the big grades......I assume you are going to the river, sounds like fun. As for the warranty issue, I took my truck to the dealer in Long Beach, and the service guy was totally cool about the mods. No problems....Good luck

You should be fine, just drive responsibly. Don't hammer the throttle and do 80 up the Needles incline, like chrismez said. Get that EGT on there and you'll know exactly how hard you can go.

Magic 28 Deckboat? Conquest? Hard to tell. Nice ride(s).

How was the lake? How was the tow?

It's a Magic, I looked closer. We'll be at Havasu June 17 - 20th for the RRX get together? I think the Magic Regatta is the same weekend...you going?

Patience, patience. I just got back today. Set the Edge at level 2. What a huge difference in climbing power. I am now happy with my CA CTD. I highly recommend this product for everyday driving on level 3 and towing on level 2.

The lake was beautiful. A little windy, but no effect on the boat. That is the weekend of the Magic Regatta, but we can not make it. We will be in Havasu from June 6-12.

I didn't notice a real difference in fuel mileage while towing. I may have seen a 1-2 MPG difference by hand calculation, but it is difficult to be sure due to different factors...particularly wind. I saw about 13-14 MPG on the way there with no wind and about 10-11 on the way home (25-30MPH headwind).

While towing, the power comes on as soon as the turbo starts spinning. But the biggest difference is felt around 1800 RPM and up through the RPM range. I saw a 10 MPH increase in manageable speed while climbing the steepest grade on the way home. No more struggling. I no longer have to shift out of overdrive to climb the small hills, and the truck actually accelarates in OD.

City driving mileage (mixed freeway and surface streets has improved by 1-2 MPG by my initial estimates. I am now seeing about 15-16 MPG. Not too bad considering I have a 4X4, auto, 3.73's and 315's. Level 3 without a load is amazing. Don't hesitate to buy one of these. Don't pay more than $400 shipped to you house. If you need a contact, PM me. Mike

Thanks for the PM, might just have to go for it... I thought for sure these things would reduce the mpg, since your pouring more fuel in it. Guess it just makes these SO's work better all the way around!

Mike, when your not towing that boat set the Edge on level 4. the power is awesome. Mine has been on that level since I bought it. I have the gauges, no problems at all with EGTs. Now if you want a little extra power set the chip as follows...

When you pull the cover off te Edge put the pins in this location.

::: ++:

The plus(+) marks are where the pins would go....That is level 5...85 HP, 220 Torque.........

What does that setting do to your EGT's? Rail pressure? Thats a lot of HP out of a pressure box, isn't it?

I have set the box at level 4...amazing power. I am just afraid that something will fail. I usually run it at level 3 when not towing. I still do not have my guages. The Westach in on terminal backorder so I decided to go with the single Autometer Phantom EGT for now. I am really apprehensive to run it at level 5....but I gotta try it now.
