Nope just let it idle. You can put grease on the drill and tap too. It works really well, I was nervous to do it too but the exhaust blows it out.

I left the truck off, then I got someone to hold the shopvac while I drilled the hole , once I was through, I tapped it(no grease), then I got a straw and taped it to the end of the shopvac and stuck it in the hole and cleaned it out. I had no issues.

Have the bit in your drill and plugged in, and the tap and wrench ready to work, at hand - crank the engine from cold, do the job efficiently so you don't get burned, but no need to rush - cast-iron shavings are very tiny curly-ques, not like the large chunks you get from steel - exhaust pressure will easily blow them out once the bit begins to penetrate the interior wall - WEAR SAFETY GLASSES! ! ! ! - drop the drill, grab the tap and you'll be done B4 the manifold gets too hot to touch - engine idles at ~275deg on a warm day - takes a while to bring that much mass up to operating temp from cool ambient

Just drill it slowly and use grease on ure tap. Takes less than 5 min. Too easy!

I dropped the turbo a few inches and taped off the turbo.. tried the grease trick and was still suprised at the shavings that dropped out from the inside..

It wasn't to much work to drop the turbo and it made me feel better...

I did such a perfect job (not) on my stock manifold, I ended up spending $400 on an ATS exhaust manifold a couple weeks later.

another thing that makes the job alot easier is to pull the plastic inner fender well... you can get straight into the minifold through the wheel well.... it also gives you room for the drill..

I drilled mine with the engine off. I magnetized the drill bit and also layed the magnet on the manifold to pull the shaving off the hole. After tapping, I used the a magnetized screwdriver to get the rest of the shaving out. There was quite a bit laying in the manifold. Dip -> Circle -> Clean -> Repeat

I picked a spot where the shaving won't drop into the downtube and used a small enough diameter screwdriver so I could circle the tip out further around the hole. You could probably stick another magnet below the hole to catch the shavings as well.

As for tapping, if you haven't tapped before, practice on something else. I didn't have the exact size bit and it took more effort get it to bite and to actually turn the tap.

As for the magnets, if you have any old computer hard drives, you can pull them apart to get a couple of strong magnets.

hope that helps, good luck.

^^^

That's the way we do it at the shop.

Place an annular magnet (like from an speaker) over the center punch and drill & tap... then insert mag probe into hole and pickup any chips that made it to the floor.
