take that brass fitting out first, it will not like the heat of the manifold. you should run the tap in 5-7 turns.

I will check to see how many turns, what is wrong with the brass plug? Will it melt and what kind of plug should I use until the Commander gets here? I guess the Commander has something other than brass to screw into the manifold? Thanks for the help.

You should go to a plumming shop and get a black pipe plug instead of the brass as it could melt and give you grief.

if it doesnt melt, it is going to permanently soften to the point that any force applied to it(wrench) will immediately deform, and you'll have a bear of a time getting it out.

I got a galvanized plug today, all they had, and it also only went in a turn or less so I guess I didn't run the tap in far enough? Seemed like like a long ways when I was doing it.

I placed mine on top of the exhaust manifold around cylinder #3. Should I expect any huge difference in temp readings?

I think the nature of the CTD beast is to run hotter at the rear cylinders. How much that is I don't know. There's a lot of experience on this forum I'm sure someone that knows will chime in.

Wy don't we have a "how to" section on this site - most other sites do?
This way we don't have to re-hash the same old procudures on the same mod 20 or 30 times a year?

FYI - when tapping pipe threads run the tap down untill you have 7 threads left and you will be at gauge and most commercial fittings fit and makeup perferct with this rule of thumb.

I agree on the how to, I did the search and read for hrs. and still didn't see an answer to what I needed. I saw a how to on changing the fuel filter and it was awsome, I could even understand it.

Don't know if you guys read on another thread I have but I found out I only had a thread or two cut, I had on my goggles and couldn't or didn't see when I first did the tap, then yesterday when I pulled the plug to see if I had to go more. There were no threads down in the hole just a couple on the top! So I re-tapped with it running and funny thing with threads actually cut the plug goes in fine!
