Custom air intake systems
Regarding all of the custom air intake systems... Will they improve fuel mileage? my instinct says no. Also what is the purpose of getting one installed. Advantages / Disadvantages ect.

the better your system breathes the cleaner and more efficient you will run. i have an airaid system, i dont think i got any better milage, but it feels like the turbo spools up faster and i have better throttle response.

I installed the Air Aid and their MIT Modular intake tube. I got 1.5 MPG better doing the exact same in-city driving on the first tank. Combined I spent about $250.00. That may seem like a lot but 1.5 more miles for every gallon over the life of the truck is seems like a smart move. I also noticed quicker throttle response and turbo spool. The best thing is the sound of the turbo whining.

I've got a prototype of SP Diesel's intake kit on my 600 and the change in throttle reponse is definitley noticeable. Not sure on the mileage difference, because I did not have the truck long at all before the intake went on.
In theory if you drive the same way, your mileage should increase slightly with a freer flowing intake.

With my intake system, I did notice about .5 to 1mpg better in town, but nothing going down the highway at 70mph. It did lower my EGT's at cruising speeds though.

I installed a MAC cold air system on mine and it gave me a much quicker responce on the trottle, and I've gotten a 1.2 mile per increase, that being said the turbo whine is fairly loud so I installed a TAG in front of it and that made it a lot quiter ! So the cost, 189 for the air system and 130 for the TAG ! Then I installed a Magna Flow s/s exhaust and I now get 23 or better on the road and 22 in the town and freeway driving!
