The 7-Zip dated 2008 is a beta version(nothing to do with smarty beta), I have not had problems using the beta 7zip's. I almost always upgrade mine when I need to use it again. The 2007 one is the last production release of 7zip, should be the safer, proven one to use. Once you download just open and install. You should only need the 32bit .exe, you probably would know if you had a 64bit operating system.

Once you get your smarty .7z file downloaded, simply right click, 7-Zip and 'extract here', you'll then have your .smt file to upload to smarty with smartyusb.exe

Hope that helps, There are tons of posts and instructions on mads website of what to follow on actualy getting the smarty updated. I think the 7zip was your main question.
