Can I take him?

A buddy of mine has a 01 D-max with a Diablo stacked with a VanAken as well as an exhaust mod. The truck seems pretty quick. Mine is stock but my Smarty Jr should be here tomorrow. I can't wait! If I go with the 100hp setting, do I have a chance or should I wait to get some more hp? He thinks his truck is all that and I would really like to put him in his place. What do you guys think?

Better hold off, till you put some more HP in yours, that Dmax with those mods will embarrass you. Keep on moddin' though, you can take him once you get some more mods!!

I would hold off, get a Smarty sr, and a tq conv and vb. Then stick it too him. Those d-maxs are light, high reving, and capable of making good power.

Smarty sr with a beta program will do it is his 4wd? If you do boosted launch and install a tc lockup switch and you could take him imo.

definately hold off. 100 horse on a duramax will take 100 horse on a cummins. The higher rpms help them a ton. My truck is on 35's and my brother has an 04 dmax on 35s. he had at the time a stock truck other than an intake exhaust and a stealth 2 from Quadzilla on 90 and stuck with me up until about 4th gear. Then i could pull him. But his truck runs awesome with just that, and is now stacked to a van aaken and has tranny mods. I dont think i can take him right now.

Just do enough to run close. Then make him run it real hard a few times.those D-max front ends will break.

You will not win unless he has some kind of mechanical failure or something goes really wrong. A D-Max is fast, no one can argue that point.

If I were you, I would not race him. You will spend tons of money to make your truck faster. It is an addiction that will make you broke. Just remember, there will ALWAYS be someone faster, somewhere. Take comfort in knowing your truck will last longer and looks better.

Thanks for all of the replies. I didn't think that I would be able to take him but I didn't know what to expect from Jr.
Looks like there might be a few more mods in the future. I think I'll have to address the tranny next.

CReed, how many shafts have you broke? This isn't good advise for someone new to the game. All this "boosted launches, stock trannies, lock up switches", I see you've been lucky, but I've now broke 3 trannies, and my last breakage was a billet output because of a "boosted launch". JMO

What PSI of boost are you launching at?

18-20 psi in 4x4, and I'll leave it at that.
