building a cr motor

will a 99vp block and crank work with a common rail head. i have found a 24v motor cheap and was woundering if it would be a good base to build on for a cr motor. i know as long as it is not a 53block. where is the marking to make sure that it is not a 53 block.

'99 VPs are junk.....Do a search in the VP section.

You want a common rail block.

There were blocks made at different countries, The 53 block is the only one to avoid from the 99's. It will have 53 written on the passenger side i believe.

I know people have put the older 24v heads on the common rail blocks. I think either way would work though

If you already have the parts, check the CR head with the 99 head gasket. Be careful to inspect the water coolant ports to make sure that they line up. Otherwise you can always do a little porting work to make things flow better.

53 blocks were cast in Brazil. They can have a 53 on either the drivers or passenger side of the block. The number is about 1"-1 1/2" tall & usually under the vacuum/powersteering pump on the drivers side, right above the oil pan. The 53 was used from 98-01, some 98 12v trucks also had the 53 block. The CR blocks are better because they have extra cooling ports for the #6 cylinder, as well as a stronger overall design.
