Brighter reverse lights
Is there a kit or lights that can be wired into the existing harness for the trailler outlet that will give me some serious backup lights? Reversing on backroads in the dark is a nightmare with this big truck and the pathetic backup lights.
Any wiring ideas or kit availabilty you know of would be great news!

I went to WalMart and bought (2) 55 watt small oval fog lights for $20. I mounted them against the flat face of my hitch receiver just above the chain holes. It was an easy tap into the tailight harness for the bck-up lights (I believe it was the white w/green stripe wire) Installation was neat and clean, cheap and works great.

I bought two general purpose lights, mounted them to the lower side of the bumper, bought a Pep Boys 12 volt relay, and used the 12 volt light power to close the relay using the 12 volt power supply to the hitch to run the lights. Brighter lights and no extra drain on the already light wiring on the back up circuit.

DD4X4 and myself did the exact same things sounds like. I used an old starter solenoid I had laying around. Really do recommend this addition. You could also add a remote swith to drive the solenoid so they act as work lights.

I think my backup lights are better on this truck than on my last but I still added a set of small retangular driving lights that use the H3 bulbs and then put in 100watt replacemets..the set I bought was complete with wiring harness and relay/ switch etc and including the higher out put bulbs was under 50 bucks canadian..i mounted the switch on the drop down door under the steering wheel ..they sure make a difference for any night time activites whether its hooking up a trailer or whatever

Anybody know of some good LED lights to use for backup?
LEDs don't use much of any power, so wouldn't have to worry about the load on the existing backup lite system. Is there such an animal as cheap LED fog lights to use for this purpose?

I also got a set of inexpensive 55 watt fog lights and wired them into the reverse circuit using a relay. I also installed a switch in the cab so the lights can be turned off, or run independently of the reverse lamps. There are some pcitures in my gallery.

Those look great on the bumber, next to the plate. Much better than putting them under the bumber by the hitch. Thanks for the great pictures.
Too bad no one makes LEDs for this. I searched the internet and couldn't find anything that would work. There are tons of yellow, red, blue, marker lights, etc. but nothing like a white fog light. Guess I'll just have to get a regular fog light.

You can get some LED backup lights through trucklight, whelen, or federal. But expect to shell out SEVERAL hundred dollars. Our fire apparatus come with total LED's except for backups. LAFD just speced some trucks with LED reverse. WHITE LED's are the most expensive, but coming down. Our first truck with an LED 97 series Whelen light head was about $900 each. They are a little cheaper now, but still not affordable for civilian use.
