I think an HTB2 62/12 would be a good choice.

oops sorry:
Its an 04 auto stock tranny. so thats a 325 correct?
He doesnt want an all out power truck, he says the stock cummins has enough power

i got a deal on a used 06 stock turbo + manifold for $150

Will the 06 turbo fit the 04?

How bad is the lag gonna be with the 62 compared to the stock turbo? and how about towing lots of loads? has the charger to do anything with engine temps? he always says that truck overheats on the hills towing! (stock)

04 or 04.5 ? 04 has a different wastegate then the 06 and it isnt a "drop in" replacement.

Turbo

I have a HTB2 62/12 and I think it's a great turbo. I tow a boat and trailer at about 3 ton. I can notice a very slight turbo lag off idle but I works great for me at highway speed.

'03 and '04 are the same 305/555 using a mechanical wastegate; 04.5 is 325/610 and uses an ECM controlled one. If you are interested I have the stock huffer from my '03. Nothing wrong with it I just wanted a better one. PM me if interested.

Its a 04.5 truck! (It has the electric controlled w/g) So will the 06 work?

If so, i'll go with the 06 turbo...
He wants nothin but stock turbo, in fact he just told me he has never mashed the go pedal from a stop! so he babies it!
The problem happened when he was pulling a load and all of a sudden the oil light came on, and he shut the truck right off, so it might be the problem not having let it cool down or what are your opinions?

dogger, As they say a 03 wont work... thanks anyway!

The coolant temp will rise a bit climbing the hills and then returns to normal or slightly higher especially during the summer months. With the turbo especially after towing needs time to cool down. If the proper time isn't given then the oil on the bearings cooks. Over time this could cause a failure.

If he overheats, have him put in some water wetter by Redline. Works great to keep all of my stuff cool, even at the sand dunes.

I think Autozone or Advanced has it. It has been used in racing for years. You can only run water in the cooling system and that stuff works.

UPDATE:

bought the turbo, it looks like new, (20,000 miles on it) and has no considerable shaft play.

the problem is, the truck wont spool up the turbo, but it doesnt smoke either, so i think its getting a 0 boost signal from the turbo, therefore no fuel it hits on EGT's 300 °F max!

HELP!!
