block/oil heater?

Being a newbie here and 1st time diesel owner where could I pick up a block
heater for my '04? I just bought the truck this summer with only 34k on it and
living in N. Illinois it gets down to 20 below at times. BTW its getting a new lift
pump as we speak on the warranty. Whats this thing do?

Is there a cummins store on-line where I could order a block heater?
Not being too well versed on diesels whats a lift pump do in laymans terms?
All I know is that it wouldn't run too good , no power and the Dodge dealer
is only 3 blocks away. Bettenhausen Dodge.

The lift pump pumps fuel from the tank to the injector pump at a relatively low pressure. The injector pump then pumps the fuel to the injectors at a very high pressure.

The newer engines already have the block heater installed in the block, you just need the power cord. It is located behind the oil filter.

i just went thru this with my 2006. ii bought the truck and never gave it a secod thought about the block heater(and cord) cause all my other trucks always had one. i'll just bet all you need to buy is the cord. the block heater comes stock on your engine and is in fact located just behind the oil filter. all you do is buy the cord and screw it into the block heater thats already ther. i foud it easier to access by undoing the clamps and removing the tube coming up from the turbocharger easy money 80 bucks froma you local dodge dealer!

Those freeze plug heaters are made by KIM Hotstart in Spokane WA. Contact them and buy direct at an even better savings.

Having lived in the cold north in my younger days, I'd have it plugged in but not turned on. The next morning I'd turn that circuit on and let it heat while I'd eat breakfast, shower and have a cup of coffee. Engine was warm enough to start easily. Keep the heater running all night will be expensive and not really needed unless you have to be ready for an emergency response call.

KIM also makes an external heater TPS series, connects through the heater hoses, has a thermostat and will keep your engine between 100 and 120.

Get a timer, have it turn on 3 hrs. before you leave in the morning, have almost instant heat & save some $$$w/ the timer.
