Black vs. White Smoke

I'm sure this has come up before, but I couldn't find it. I've noticed on my new diesel that sometimes when I stomp on it I get some smoke. Up until today I was pretty sure it was always white smoke. But today I stomped on it to switch lanes and left the guy behind me in a cloud of black smoke. So my questions to you experts on here... Is getting any smoke bad or are they both okay on occasions. I'm just curious sometimes I catch the vibe on here that smoke is a good/cool thing to have. Thanks in advance.

Oh and my truck is all stock right now, so its not any performance mods.

Black smoke is nothing but to much fuel with not enough air. No problem there. White smoke can mean a bad injector.

Also, it is perfectly normal for a diesel to spit some white smoke when first started in cold weather, but it should go away after a few minutes.

I haven't done anything to my truck yet either, and when I lug around town or drive it real easy for a while it builds up soot in the exhaust system and the next time I open it up you can barely see the car behind me. When I drive it like I should, I seldom see a puff of anything.
