Another option my tranny builder did offer that made sense was the planetary gear cluster runs thrush washers 4 in total with a minimum gap @ .0100 in. each .040 total.

So visualize the planetary & the ring gear in full gap separation which is all centered to the intermediate shaft, as the tranny is let go in a boost launch each .010 gap is forced to the end thrush washer then tranfered to the intermediate shaft that's a lot of torque.

Rob M. my tranny builder ( worked @ BD in the transmission department in research & developement) offered using torrington needle bearings as a replacement to the thrush washer with a total gap of 4 bearings of .010

Tighter tolerances mean more efficient & cooler running transmission

Well If you plan on drag racing or pullin you might aswell do the billet output, yeah you could leave it stock for a weak link thats not devistating to break but if you wanna race and play your gonna break it fairly quick with good power. So it's just the chance you take on the intermediate holding up. Gotta pay to play, it's all part of the game.

Like many of the other DTR Members here, I am running billet input, output and intermediate ishafts in my 1996 Dodge CTD 12 valve.

IMHO, if you are doing ANY drag racing or sled pulling it is cheap insurance. The Members have already pointed out that if that intermediate does break, there is going to be alot of damage internally which IMO, far outweighs the initial cost of the billet intermediate shaft.

I think the concern really is that there seems to be some billet shafts that are of poor quality on the market. When the manufacturersand sellers get that batch located then all will be good again.
In the mean time get a warrantee--in writing that says you are covered in the sport you are in, if the shafts break and take out the case.
