"I guess you don't run a Cummins much. The Cummins is not a high revving, low torque engine like the ford."
The 3rd Gen 5.9 is a much better rever than the 7.3PSD. The 5.9 torque curve is flat (600ftlbs) from 1600 to 2900 RPM. 7.3 torque curve peaks at 1600 (500 ftlbs) and falls down to 425ish at 2750. A PSD feels dead over 2500 RPM compared to a 3rd gen Cummins. I've driven a few.
The 3rd Gen Cummins is the only current (or ever) pickup diesel with a flat torque curve. I find that pretty impressive. I know about torque rise, so don't go there.
"I would not beat my engine by pulling a grade as you discribe at what did you say, 2900 at wot in 100 degree weather."
If you were in a Ford or a Duramax, you'd be pulling at 3200 RPM. High RPMs mean lower EGTs, remember ?
"Of course I am talking about 30,000 pounds"
If you are pulling this kind of weight, you need a medium duty truck, not a pickup truck. The engine might be up to it, but the brakes aren't.
