BHAF - Installed!

Well, I finally got around to installing BHAF. I used a 10-1/2 x 10-1/2 Donaldson. I kept the turbo inlet elbow as I believe the turning vanes are good for reducing fatigue on the compressor wheel. Besides, the 4 inch steel tube went right into it. I have about $129 in it. Filter $50, Steel tube $6, Aluminzed close radius 4" 90 $36, Donaldson 4 inch rubber elbow $25, 4 clamps $12. No mods required to the truck and the stock system can go back in 5 minutes.

I removed the AFE flat panel filter and like others I have used there is traces of dust on the clean side.

Compare:

BHAF, 10-1/4 OD element x 10-1/8 long, 182 pleats each 2-1/4 deep = 8546 square inches of face area!

AFE wire gauze panel filter, 9-1/2 x 8-1/2, 22 pleats each 1-3/8 deep = 595 square inches face area.

BHAF has over 14X the face area

It looks cool. But wait till rain comes, the filter gets extremely dirty, and your egts will rise because you are sucking in engine heat and turbo heat. Not efficient when you really test with it but yea the turbo sounds cool. Maybe just my experience but I have been there and done it. Peace out

Well interesting comments and point taken even if all negative. I guess I'll be building a box for it to seal it off from the engine side and pickup the original air intake tract from the front of the grille. It seems like many of the CAIs out there are similarly situated with a feeble attemt to isolate heat. I will be dealing with rain being in East Tennessee.

I could care less about the noise as long as it is not too loud. Hopefully, it will not be with the 4 inch lines. A box should quiet it some too.

I just have a bad taste for a grossly inadequate stock paper filter and I don't like oiled gauze which has its issues with filtration and correct oiling and cleaning.

Therefore, I will make a proper paper filter work. On to the housing design phase!

I have had no problems running a BHAF. EGTs stay well in check all the time. Get an Outerwears cover and be done with it. It's not waterproof but it IS water repellent.

OK good to hear. I'll try the cover. Google to find it?

My digital volt meter has a thermocouple input (many do) so I'm going to latch on to some thermocouple wire and make a few up and set them around the filter and have a passenger check the temps as I drive and sit in traffic, etc. I would imagine parked will be the worst but then no load either. Running on the highway will be interesting to see how much of the original cold air feed bleeds around the filter. I'll report back when I have temp data.

Meanwhile I have a seat to fix and a cluster sent out for a tach repair.
