Best non in-dash GPS sytem for the money?

Hey all, been a while since I been on here. Im looking to get a GPS sytem, and I was wondering what you guys have and like? I was originally going to get a complete head unit with a flip out screen and dvd/nav unit, but there a bit pricey. Being I have more than one vehicle, I figured the non in dash way would be better. I was looking at the Tom Tom's and magellins. I specifically want one that can list and direct you to gas stations that carry diesel. Ive seen some in dash units that you can program to show you the diesel stations, and I was wondering if there are any portable units that can do the same?? So, to all of you's that have any GPS/Nav units, let me know how you like them, and if you dont mind, how much it cost.

Thanks for any help and advice!

there is a magellan 300? 330? at wal-mart that is pretty decent. I got mine at target with no maps, my dad bought the same one a walmart with the midwest map already downloaded in it. Around 300 at WM, I paid 350 at target onsale. They have voice prompts and touch screens. Dont know about the diesel stops though. Maybe not the best, but they are among the cheapest.

Don't overlook the Garmin products. My Garmin Streetpilot 2620 is several years old, but by keeping the mapping software updated, it's just as accurate as the new ones. It has the capability to display exits for points of interest (fuel, dining, rest areas, motels, etc.) as you mention. I use it in my truck and on my motorcycle and like it better than the OEM Alpine DVD-based GPS system that came in my Acura 3.2TL-S since the maps are much more detailed once one leaves major metropolitan areas.

My vote goes to Lowrance iWay 500c, but I can't tell you for sure if it will direct you to diesel fuel stations. Even though, I think its the best bang for the buck.

I have tried almost all of them and to me nothing can beat the Garmin 2720. TomTom looks pretty but lacks POI (points of interest). Eclipse units and others that use there interface are not user friendly and will not list things (POI) in an easy way near you. Garmin has been around a long time the 27xx units may not look as pretty but they have the best POI coverag I have seen and I have traved the entire USA and it has always found every address I have thrown at it the others could not ESPECIALLY the TomTom it couldn't even find my house! garmin 2720 is $900 and will last forever, I think the new versions have bluetooth and wifi as well...

just my .02

...plus XM radio, active weather and traffic, etc. You really need to check the Garmin website to select the specific model that has the features you want and are willing to pay for.

I've got the TOM TOM Rider:

and it does have the Points of Interest in it. It's rpricey though.
While its geared for motorcycle users, and hence has no diesel locator, I like its portability with the car mount, while still bike friendly. Just my $.02 worth

I got MS Streets & Trips 2006 for $77.50 on EBay, brand new in the unopened box with the receiver.

I've never had a GPS of any kind, so I am like a kid in a candy store with it. Of course if you don't have a laptop, it's a moot point.

If you have the money (like $900) the Garmin 2720 is probably the best. But for $600 I don't think you can beat the Lowrance. They've been around for a long time also, and make the majority of the GPS used in offroad racing, boats, and airplanes. The iWay 500c has a bright, crystal clear 5" touchscreen, and last night found my polling place that Mapquest couldn't find. In that price point I think its the best out there. Good luck!

Try a Google search on "Garmin 2720 price". I found the 2720 for as low as $609. I would post a link to the vendor, but I don't think that's allowed.

Make sure they are an authorized dealer because Garmin WILL NOT honor a warranty if bought off Ebay or unauthorized dealers.

I just started a new job that requires me to deliver to different customers (most out in the sticks) a couple days a week. I bought a Garmin (their headquarters is in Olathe KS, after all) C330. I love this thing. There have been a couple of times that it told me to go a certain way and I knew a better way, but I guess it depends on the settings you specify. I don't think it specifies diesel sales, but it does include all gas stations, truck stops included. I think I gave around $400 including taxes. I wish I had this thing when I was delivering Farmland meat over the road.

Bought a Garmin Streetpilot C340 for approximately $460 at Amazon. This unit has been amazing helping us find our way on trips plus finding places to eat, purchase fuel, tire repaires, etc. Would not want to take a trip without it!
