I went thru 2 Cobra GPS100 handheld units. Neither lasted more than 2 days. A fluke maybe, I don't know. Didn't matter if was run on batteries, or the cord that plugs into the cig. lighter.

Just a basic unit. No maps. The GPS 500 and GPS1000 do though. The 1000 can be hooked up to your laptop as well.

Delorme Street Atlas 2005 with a USB powered GPS on my laptop. Combined with a Jotto desk it is pretty darn awesome.

I have a Magellan Roadmate 700.
Nice large clear display, turn by turn with promts, built in hard drive loaded maps (no chips), Points Of Interest (Gas, banks, ATM, Hospitals, police stations. etc) pretty simple to set up.
Seems to be VERY accurate.
On a windshield mount for now, until I get and set up an aux antenna.
Then it going to be mounted to the lid of my CB radio (Original Brolin mount).

Agreed. I have the same on my CarPC (see gallery).
IGuidance is much better for smaller screens and touch-screen.

If you've got an old PC, the CarPC is the best of all worlds.
GPS, DVD, TV, FM, MP3, CD, on-board Diagnostics, Gauges, Backup Camera, Games, Internet, etc... It'll do anything a computer will do because that's what it is....

no offense but this is the wrong place for this post.

It should be in the "no drivetrain" forum or somewhere else.

not meaning to offend anyone here just a reminder.

Look at my sig. Dont go with anything but Garmin. Thats from someone who has tried them all. I have a 2610 that cost me something like 700 1.5 years ago. I love it. very easy to learn, and even with old maps has yet to get me lost.

Correction:
"Can include high-performance mods, or general accessories."

This discussion is included in the category of "general accessories"

We have a Garmin GPSmap 60CS that we use when traveling. I also bought the car pack and a bicycle handlebar mount for it. We wanted something to use in the truck but also portable enough to use when we go biking or hiking around campgrounds. The City Select CD that came with the car pack is loaded on our laptop so that I can add routes and maps as we go.

I agree. I use the Garmin GPSmap60CS also. Wonderful unit. I have loaded the Topo maps for one area and the City Select for another area. Can hide all, show all or hide and show each of the maps detail on the fly. This should work great for me as I use the City side while around home (eastern states) and will use the Topo when on Vacation in Hawaii. Topo even has some auto routing but not as much as the City Select. Works wonderful.

If you need to take the unit with you, I recommend the GPSmap60CS or even the 60CSX which I hear is now out.

I went ahead and bought this one here. It has some maps included and should work well with the new SmartPhone.

Thanks to BigBlue it will get here in a few days. The checks in the mail.

I got the GPS and have it installed and talking to the phone. It works pretty well, but was not real easy to set up.

The Windows Streets and Trips 2006 software leaves a lot to be desired. What maps there are, are pretty good, but the list of maps available is real short. For some reason, when I ask it to look up an address, it displays the map momentairly, then goes back to the previous map....? Also, I guess it's because the Smart Phones are so new, the PC part of the software will not recognize the GPS. It tries to load it, but the phone comes back with an error about the ".CAB is not set of for the device", whaterver that means. I have contacted the GPS folks and they are working on the problem.

I have looked at another map site called Mapopolis. They have some pretty good stuff, but the better packages are about $100 per year. You get to keep the maps downloaded, but cannot get new ones without paying again.

Since the maps from all sources have to be downloaded to the phone, I install a "Mini SD" card for extra storage space.

All in all, I'm fairly well satisfied.
