Not all controllers are the same, I prefer and use the Tekonsha Prodigy brake controller. Go here to read up on it.

A lot of people swear by brakesmart, I've never had one as my Tekonsha Prodigy has given me zero problems, had it on my old Ford 6.9, took it out and put it in my CTD, still works great. For the money, you can't beat it.

Another one for the Prodigy...AWESOME brake controller. 10k boat behind me and I could hardly tell that it was behind me when I was braking...4k rv behind me and it actually felt like I stopped EASIER with it behind me than when I was empty...7k truck and trailer load behind me and again...just an awesome controller! Two thumbs up!

Brakesmart tap's into the brake line itself, and is not inertia based. Thus you have zero lag between hitting your brakes and having the trailer brakes engage. Its much easier to install (IMHO), as you dont have to worry at all about installation angle (I dont know if the Prodigy needs that or not). Also, you never have to adjust the gain on it, which has been really nice. No more brake tests, or grabbing brakes while pulling out of the campground. The only down side is the price, but I'm glad i spent the extra on it.
