Below 45 Degrees F my truck wont start????

As stated if the ambient temp is below 45 F my truck will not start, but if I walk away and come back in the afternoon when temps rise above 45 she cranks right up. Doesnt matter if its plugged in or if the grids come on, below 45 no go above 45 she starts.

When it doesnt start I get CEL 0153?? I think, its the skim key code. It will turn over 3-4 times normal then the trans and engine light come on and bam she stops cranking. It stops turning as if something computer related kills the starter, otherwise cranks like normal just stops after 3-4 cranks with trans and cel.

What the heck. I have never even heard of such a thing. If it were the battery I would get a tired crank, or it would start plugged in but not start if the grids fired. But none of that matters it will start either way as long as its over 45 degrees. Im going crazy.....

Any thoughts?

Rye:

Sorry to hear about the problems you are having! I had a similar problem with one of mine.

Rye, the keys to our 2006 trucks have a "security chip" inside the key. They can sometimes be "temperature sensitive" especially if they have gotten wet or been dropped hard etc. One little "check" you can do on the key is this. When you start the truck, look into the dashboard area by the tach/speedometer, and you should see a small red light as you start the truck. That light should go out when the truck starts. If it does NOT go out, then there is something wrong with that key. I would try another key to see if you can start the truck when the temperature is below 45 degrees. if you CAN start it then you will also know the key you have now is bad.

Hope that helps you some buddy! My key had gotten pretty wet and I ended up having to replace the key.

Let us know how you make out and Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!

Definitely sounds like the key or batteries. I have no grid heater or block heater and have no problems starting the truck in 20* weather.

No I havent been able to drive it for a few days, or try to drive it anyway so I cant remember the code #. But I know it is the skim key code, I referenced it the first time this happened.
What worries me is I do not remember seeing the security light stay on or flash as it should if your key is screwed up.

I can handle mechanical problems but electronic gremlins scare me. I will re-try and post the proper code and # when I get home. Although it is supposed to be 50 so it will start right up. May have to post the proper # and my results late tonight or in the morning.

Keep the suggestions and help comming guys, nothing worse than having a very expensive boat anchor in the front yard .

i wonder if my problem that i am having is related to my key being dead also. I posted about my truck sometimes starting and sometimes not, that my key fob doesn't work and all these lights keep coming on, alarm goes off for no reason, and that red light is on all the time

Not really related but I had a 2000 gas truck, tho it was a dodge :-) i had a problem with it sometimes starting and sometimes not, talke to one of the boys at the dealer and he told me to check my RV plug, i thought he was crazy, but after another day or so with it not starting i looked at the plug and it was full of mud, pulled it off cleaned it up and didnt have a problem for the next 4 years i owned it....

well tried both keys, still no start. The security light goes out as it should but it still stops cranking.

And I can get my numbers mixed so the code is skim key, 0513 thats all that is present.

Crank No Start or No Crank?

I've spent more time with Nissans and their Anti-Theft Keys, so might be similar...

Battery Voltage really affects the system when trying to read the key. Monitor with a Volt Meter when attempting to start.

Loose connections and terminal pinfit are other biggies.
