Balancing 315/70 17 BFGs

Hello All,
Has anybody heard of or has experience with using the "Powder Balance Technique". If so would you enlighten me. My goal is to get a permanant balance where I can rotate the tires myself and save $21 every 6K, and of course have a smoother ride, I have a little shake b/w 50 &60mph.

I've also heard that this form of balancing is the best for large tires. true or false.

My tire guy when mounting and balancing my 315s wound up with 6-8oz of lead on each wheel!! The H2 wheels had 1-2 oz with the 315s still mounted on them.

I tried to have my Dealer perform the Road Force Balance and they said they couldn't do it b/c of wheel and tire size.

Thanks for any help

Jamie

Try another tire retailer. You should not have to rebalance the tire every rotation. Maybe at 30k when you remount inside edge out. I have had no problems with "traditionally" balanced BFG tires in that size range as long as they rotated every 7.5k.

I am using ceramic beads from Innovativebalancing.com. They are the best way i have found to keep these big tires in balance. (I have the same size tires as you.) Smooth as glass through 80 mph. Use 8-10 ozs per tire.

I highly recommend their product.

caughtinmygrill,

PM please on how you attained this product, and how much it was. BTW when reading the website on the application guide, it states 6oz per 315/70? How come you write 8-10?

I highly like what I read about their product .

They also state in their literature that every tire is different and that you may need an extra ounce or two to reach the desired balance.

By the way, they work great, and I only put in 6 oz like specified.

I have had BFG All Terrain T/As on trucks for the last 20 years at least. Every size from stock on 15s to 35x12.5son 18s. I have always had them balanced and rotated by who ever I bought them from; Discount Tire, performance shops, etc. Except for a couple of tires that were just out of round to begin with I have had no real problems. Rotate every 6-8k and keep them aired up properly. The 315s on my truck were put on by a 4wheelparts store locally. They have been fine. Dealer rotated and balanced(dont think they changed a thing) at 8k, had a discount certificate. They have been on for over 16k and ride just like I expected out of a BFG All Terrain T/A.

You will know pretty quick if they are out of balance or not. If they are then take them back to who put them on and have them balanced or replaced.

Find a tire dealer that does both static and dynamic balancing

Every tire and every wheel has a heavy point. So you have the dealer static balance and turn those two points 180* opposite of one another. (They may have to break down the tire on the rim and move it a couple times to identify the heavy points of each). Then you dynamic balance the assembly (wheel and tire) and you'll have the best possible balance for that tire and wheel match. You'll be surprised at how little amount of weight you will need to have a great balance using this process. Don't go to the dealer during a busy time frame and expect that they will mess with that two-fold process however.

i have used the power for years with tires in the 38" range, and it seems to work ok, but not great.
these where on a daily driver, and would shake about 50/60 mph, and then at 80mph and above. the power seems to clump up if you get some water when filling your tires(moisture)
but when the tire heats up, which swammpers do, they seem to smooth out a little.
i have never used these rings before , but i think i might look in to that for my 315's , they seem to have a slight shake at 55 mph, then goes away.

Out-of-here, We had an appointment in the afternoon when it's not busy. They still said they could not Road Force Match Balance them b/c they were too big? My wheels are 17x8 with 4.5 backspacing with 315s of course.

Anyway I really like the ceramic beads. I think I'll try that and then do my own rotations .

thanks guys

But the fact is there are shops out their with the equipment and intelligence enough to handle. Unfortunately you haven't found the right one yet. Good luck.
