Ok, It should probably go without saying that tranny threads are notorious for some rather interesting discussions but I have to ask.

I'd like get the truck to around 5-550 hp and there are a few other mods (injectors / turbo) that I am looking at but I figure the tranny is prob the best place to start sooo.....

Which auto tranny gives the best bang for the $$$? I was hoping $3500 or so would get me to the 5-550 HP. Is this possible?

I currently only tow (about 5k lbs) a few times a month during the summer and this will prob increase with the 5er on the horizon next year so I'm not looking for a "race" truck or tranny.

IMO HTS is the best bang for the buck....and an excellent tranny to boot!

I just ordered some parts for my 48re this past weekend. Based on what I have learned, my answer would be yes. You can get a transmission to hold that type of power for the amount of money you said. It may not be ideal, but it will be MUCH better then what you have now.

I think you might come out better by just upgrading what you have rather then buying a complete transmission. You could basically buy a new TC/VB/FP and a couple of new billet shafts for $3500 give or take. Of course you will probably have to spend more for the install, but you will have to do a install either way. For about $3500 if you just swap trans. for a new one then you probably will not get a FP or any billet shafts.

If you're not racing the truck then you shouldn't need billet shafts. A billet input is always nice to have, but you can probably get by without it if you're careful.

TC = $1000 - $1300
VB = $400 - $450
FP = $400
Misc Internals = $80

Install should only run about $200 - $400 for those parts. Since you have an '06 I would just get those parts installed in your current tranny. It will make a night and day difference in how it drives!

You know that was my second question / option. I was curious if the VB / TC would hold the extra HP. I like the easy in and out but if I add the laminated flex plate and billet in and intermediate it looks to be closer to 4500.

So far my wife has bought my line about added mpg's with the tranny upgrades but the 4500 might be a tough sell.

You NEED a flexplate with that kind of power. You don't need a billet intermediate if you're not racing or sledpulling or towing heavy. Save your money for something else.

So, what is the definition of "racing"? Is this taking a run at the track, or doing a low boost launch to shame those pocket rockets?

I guess I would define racing as boosted launches. At those power levels, 4x4 boosted launches need a billet input at the very minimum.
