anyone using amsoil??

A new amsoil dealer just opened up in town so I've been thinking about switching from rotella 15-40 to amsoil but the recommended amsoil for diesels is 5w-30. isn't that too thin??
Is it worth the switch? Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
Thanks

Re:anyone using amsoil??

According to my manual you should be using 15w-40. That's what I use and that's what Cummins & DC say to use :-X

Re:anyone using amsoil??

I'm using the 15W-40 Diesel/Marine. If I was way up North, I might consider the thinner stuff.

Way up north to me means half-way up Canada.

Re:anyone using amsoil??

Calvin, the appropriate Amsoil would be the 15w40 HDD/Marine oil. However as posted above, that may be a little thick for cold climates. I suggest you try some mobil delvac 1 5w40 synthetic.

I agree with Lightman, Delvac 1 would be a good pick for Colorado year 'round. It's thicker stuff for summer than the Amsoil yet flows good when it gets mighty cold.

Re:anyone using amsoil??

just getting ready to dump my break in oil and pondering on what to run in this one

I ran Cenex synthetic deo 15-40 in my last two rigs and really liked it

one thing I noticed was the drain plug was always caked with soot when I ran the rotella 15-40 and when i switched to the cenex synthetic the drain plug was imediately cleaned to a chrome look

that tells me that the oil is cleaning all the junk out of the motor and putting it (hopefully) in the filter

I didnt like how every thing was so full of soot with the rotella

are you guys noticing something similar with the delvac 1????

Agades - I dont think examining your drain plug is really the best way to determine your oil's effectiveness. A $15 oil analysis test will tell you a lot. To answer your question in short though - high quality oils like delvac 1 and amsoil have very high detergency, and will keep your engine much cleaner than rotella or any other petroleum based oil.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE "ROTELLA 1 SYNTH"?

Re:anyone using amsoil??

Rotella T synthetic is a group 3, not a true synthetic. If you are gonan spend the money on a synthetic, get a real group 4 pao/ester based synthetic. Otherwise save your $ and use dino.

I thought that was covered in this thread....

https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...22974;start=15

The Rotella is a Group 3 synthetic (semi or pseudo synthetic) - which offers only marginally better or equal performance to a premium conventional oil (Mobil Delvac 1300, Delo 400, Rotella T). The advantages of a group 3 syn do not justify the additional expense. If you are going synthetic, go with a real synthetic - Group 4 synthetics are much better (Mobile 1 Delvac, Amsoil etc.)

Re:anyone using amsoil??

Is either the amsoil or delvac 1 a full ester based oil?

How much can I expect to pay per gallon?

[/quote]They're both group IV's, the real deal. I paid about $15.50/gallon for Amsoil; not sure how much Delvac 1 is.

Re:anyone using amsoil??

What kind of oil change intervals are you guys running with the full synthetics? I use to run Amsoil in my old rig, and never changed it. Changed the filter every 10K and added what ever was nessasary to bring the oil level to full. Just wondering how DC and Cummins would view this?

Re:anyone using amsoil??

Iron horse,

I don't think DC would warranty any failures based on doing that. I have heard from an Amsoil distributor on another board that although the synthetic base can withstand many thousands of miles(seemingly forever) beyond extended interval drains, the additive packages that they use do have a lifespan of sorts. I think amsoil recommends only doubling the manufacturers advertised oil change interval unless you get regular oil analysis done.

I have never used Amsoil synthetic but could someone comment on how dirty the oil looks after extended oil change intervals with this product. My Dakota's engine was turned into a sludge factory from only 4 years of Dino abuse. I switched to Mobil 1 and it is still getting dirty fairly quick by cleaning sludge out of the engine in my estimation. I want to switch over my Ram to synth. after break in but can anyone tell me if seal failures are covered under warranty with using any of the synthetics?

Randy
