I am wondering how much faster spool up is. In 2010, in CA, apparently roadside opacity tests are coming. With my fuel turned down (stock injectors), I wonder if there will be a big lag that will cause lots of smoke. With the Smarty on like 3 or 5, I wonder if there would be a big lag diff between the two.

Thanx.

Just upgrade the Smarty to the PoD.Find the level and percentage that works best and if by chance you get pulled adjust the Smarty down below 20,that will put you at way less power than stock. My truck won't puff any smoke below 30% on level 3 and feels like a slug.

I'm assuming they will be testing by pressing the accellerator pedal with the truck in neutral?

For spool up difference the 65 is going to spool up about 100-150 rpm sooner,so not much to be gained.Being you have a 6 speed plus a cam I wouldn't figure you would have any problem with smoke control?

The 65 wheel lights a bunch quicker and is enough turbo for 500 hp...

I know your wanting quicker spool so you don't get noticed by these smog checkers and a 65 wheel will help some. How will they perform this opacity test? The little bit I read on it is you will be asked to mat the throttle with the tranny in neutral while they have some sort of device shoved in the tailpipe. If this is the case, with the standard Smarty on any level you are likely to fail, regardless of the turbo.

Wow, that stinks they're starting those tests...i was born and raised in CA...but some of their rules / laws are really junk...they're the same with offroad vehicles, guns,....basically anything fun and they ruin it with legislation.

John one of my customers works for carb & I have been talking with him regarding the proposed eventual testing which all diesel trucks will have to submit to !

He said that at this point the effort is very un-organized, in terms of the how what ,where & when of the inspections will work, but one thing is for sure, they are coming soon to california.

I would not bet against the fact that many other states will soon follow
it's the ol" Monkey see Monkey Do.... it's a legal tax collection of additional $ and the plan to rid as many diesel vehicles as possible !

Too bad the small % of enviro's are so very well organized & always develop ways to bully any & all motorsports, combustion type vehicles, or anything with wheels !

I say pull all there drivers lic and let em walk !!

i get a heavy duty e test done every year to pull my trailer, at my reg weight. they stick a probe in the tail pipe, and do 3 snap tests. basically mat the pedal down quikly and let it come back down in rpm. i had all programming out, except for the edge on 1, it never changes, and i have the sps66.it will smoke for about 2 secs, and clears up. i think the turbo will have nothing to do with it regardless, because no load. your in neutral, and the turbo will hardly spool at all.they guy told me my truck was really clean, from others he has done, and my oil was old.the only thing i did was to make sure the air filter was clean.i had 4" exhaust at the time, and the probe kept falling out the first couple times.

There is some cool info. Is this called an "opacity" test? I bet it will be the same thing. Did the 305/555 come w/a converter?

the 03's and early 04's only have a muffler. no kitty cat or resonator.

I was working at numerous auctions at the time,..

And '03-'04 was muffler only. (unless you're just talking CA vehicles) The cat came on 04.5s.

Back to turbos. I'm presently running the 62/65/13ss,.. it spools like lightning. However even with stock sticks I don't think you can get to the end of the 1/4 without meltdown. I don't need to go 125mph,.. what I need is to stay cool through the 1/4. So I want to throw three turbos up for conversation and see what you guys think would work best once I put some Flux 2.5s back in her. Here are turbos I think will work but what would work best,.... 64/65/13ss; 62/71/13ss; 64/71/13ss.

THOUGHTS???
