i dont need one but i sure want an exhaust brake and they have some really good prices...what are some of the pro/cons to the pac brake as opposed to the jake brake i can get from the dealer? this site seems pretty cool...sorry about the hijack

I believe one major difference is the Jake Brake will not void your warranty if bought/installed at the dealer. IMO that's worth the extra money for the Jake.

Jake runs off a vacuum that is also used for service brakes. Vac fails you have 0 braking power. My pac uses pressure supplied from a viair compressor. Vac pump fails I still have my pac

If, no when, I install an exhaust brake, it will be the Pac Brake. I believe that the separation from the vacuum is important. As morkable says "much better low rpm braking'. I also like the idea of having the on-board air. as for the warranty being voided - it should NOT make a bit of difference. My dealership sells both and installs both, many of the dealerships handle both. The real lack of argument about your warranty from DC would be in regard to the fact that they already warranty an exhaust brake, and, the pressures from that brake in exhaust backup are within the same range of the pac brake. The engine itself are found in other manufacturers vehicles, and, those vehicles have both types of brakes on them. If DC or Cummins did not offer any type of exhaust brake, then you would have problems trying to argue the effect of this on the engine and exhaust system.

The 06 Jake has its own belt driven Vacuum pump.

The 06 and the 01 service brakes are both driven by the power steering pump, not the vacuum pump. The difference is the 01 PS pump rides piggy-back on the gear driven vacuum pump, and the 06 is a belt driven PS pump, completely seperate from the vacuum pump .

So if the vacuum pump dies on an 01, it would have to seize up or break the coupler to the PS pump in order to loose all brakes and power steering.

BTW this happened to me on my 99 .....not fun!

I talked to my dealer,, not that I have much in the way of warranty anyways, but they said that in no way shape or form does an exhaust brake void warranty, and that was direct from the dc rep
