anybody who has melted a piston???
What did your truck do when it happened???
I'm chasing ghosts here trying to diagnose my truck.
Got a small thump noise I can hear through the air filter. Truck runs sluggish unless the throttle is mashed. Good boost, good rail, good fuel pressure. Did install springs recently, so gonna gauge those tomorrow.

Mine still runs good when the boost builds, just feels sluggish and pathetic trying to build it up to it. Compared to what it used to be I should say.

one of my trucks had a valve problem and it was making a thumping sound that you could hear at idle and it was real loud when you got close to the intake. Don't know exactly what was done but dodge fixed it for me. I believe they replaced some valves and did some head work. Not real sure though.
The problem above was present the day I picked the truck up from the dealership after they had done motor work cause an injector had hung open and filled the crank case full of diesel.

oil pouring out of the exhaust is what happen to mine. The half dollar size hole in the side of the piston had a lot to do what that 
The truck still ran pretty good and really didn't sound that bad but, it pumped a quart a minute out of the exhaust !
I think you'd know it if this was in your truck !.....

one thought.... how much have you driven the new springs ? It could be possible they caused a seat to semi-drop ? There's a lot more closing power than there used to be with those springs.

Doh!!! That's what I figured. Might be nice to see what's underneath. So how hard is it to get the head out without damaging anything. I bet that thing is heavy?

I've seen bent push rod and had even popped off the rockers, cause a miss and thump in the intake.
But when my piston burnt, it just missed, nothing else and didn't notice any sound in the intake or the exhaust. Just a miss that caused the truck to vibrate.

As noted, you'll probably have to remove the head, but first pull the valve cover and look around with your fingers crossed for luck. Might be a lash problem or some simple thing. I remember hearing that sound from a couple of early 24 valve engines with slightly bent pushrods.
