I installed an afe Stage I with standard filter and a pre-filter last August. After about 20,000 mile use I order an afe Pro-Gaurd 7 filter so I could swap filters and clean the original afe standard filter. During the time with the standard filter, I switched Torque Tubes and stock air filter to turbo tubing a number of times. I always checked the intake tubing and turbo and never found any dust or coating of any kind. I switched to an afe Stage II with Pro-gaurd 7 filter after about 8,000 miles on the Stage I Pro-Gaurd 7 filter. Once again no dust or film in the torque tube at all. So the bottom line is that I am satisfied with the afe air intake and filters so far. Don't have any experience with any other diesel air intake brands.

Most of these reusable filter types have come from a long line of race environments. The coating of oil traps the smallest particles. I used them on all of my motorcycles/dirt bikes and 4 wheelers. On my dirt bike and such I used the covers that were offered to keep the water out.
I stopped listening to all the HP hype a long time ago but for the the ability to clean them and reuse is worth the price.
In my sig you can see I have the Bully Dog Air intake system that has a metal heat shield to protect against the hot engine. Air in to engine and heat don't mix...
