I have a stock head unit, and I'm running 6x9 Polks in the front doors, and 6 1/2 in the rear. No amp.
They sound much better than stock, and the whole install time for me was about 90 minutes. The speakers got rid of the tinny sound that rattled the doors when you turned the bass up.
Speaking of which, when the door panels are off, go around and tighten all of the bolts for the mirrors. I had a few loose ones, most likely causing the rattles.
If you're planning on keeping the stock head unit, pay close attention to the speaker sensitivity rating for the speakers you choose. Stiffer speakers will give cleaner bass, but will need more power to drive (bad for a stock head unit). A higher dB sensitivity rating is preferable for stock head units.

Im planning on installing some 3 way 4" in the dash tonight. just cheapys till i get some extra funding. I plan on using the grills they came with and cutting a hole in the dash cover and utilizing the hole underneath to let the speakers sit in. The grills will make it look good.
Personally i think the factory grills in the dash are a little constricting for good sound to pass through.

A lot of recommendations for Focal speakers.
I'm looking at their stuff, they have 4 lines: Access, Polyglass, K2 Power, and Utopia BE.
The Utopia is obviously out of the question at $4,200.
K2s are a bit pricey even.
I see some price overlap between the Access and the Polyglass. Are the cheaper end Focals still as good/better than comparably priced more well known speakers (JL, Pioneer, etc.)?
Really not diggin' $500 for a pair of front speakers, but if their cheaper models at ~$300-$350 are still better than other models in that price range, then that is OK.

Yes all Focal products are very good. Remember sound is a preference. What I like you may not so go and listen to them. I had Focal k2 power two way before my current 3 way set up. I would have focal access before pioneer's upper end. Just me. Also, I would always spend more money on my front speakers than any other speaker in the vehicle. Don't be the guy how spends two grand on subs but installs 6.5 two way with 50 watt amps. Most of your music comes from mid bass, mid range and tweeters so that should be the hart of your speaker system. I spent close to 1500 on my 3 way speakers alone so I'm not blowing smoke. I highly recommend a 3 way set up. I'll never go back. This is all my likes and preferences so go listen to all that you can in your price range. Don't let sales people tell you this sounds better than that because it's your ears in your truck not his. Good luck!

Since you have to take door apart to get to speakers Install dyna-mat in all doors. Throw away dodges cheap (they all are) "water dam". That thin piece of plastic adheared to door with sticky stuff. That water dam distorts all sound and does nothing for sound. It was easy and made the sound better and reduced interior noise alot. Really is easy to do. I used a heat gun to warm and only warm metal. Check out dyna-mats web site
