The way I understand it is that the new AFE filters are 6" and the older ones were 4". The proguard 7 filters more particulates but is a little more restrictive in doing so. I would say in your scenario, the stage 2 with a 6" proguard 7 would flow more than the 4" proguard 7. The stage 2 used to mean it included the torque tube which used to be an option for the stage one but only had a 4" filter. So, if you get the stage 1 and then buy the torque tube you basically have the stage 2. The ony options are the proguard 7 or standard filter which has an iversion on the end of the cone which gives it more filter area which flows better. If you don't get the proguard 7 I would at least run a pre filter sock. I hope I have this correct as I'm finally close to what I'm going to buy. Maybe someone else will chime in and educate us on this.

That sounds correct on all points. I have the Stage I and metal Torque Tube, which was kinda listed as Stage II when I bought last summer. I have both a standard afe filter(4" outlet) and a Pro-Guard 7(4" outlet). The standard does have the additional cone filtering area. I do believe that it allows a little more air flow, I don't have quite as much black smoke with the standard. I run the pre-filter on both, just to keep mud, water and debrie from getting directly on the filter.

I would like to have the new Stage II with bigger filter(6" outlet) and non-metal torque tube, but cannot justify the difference in cost.

The new afe Torque Tube is not metal as the original was.

marc03,

The Stage II PG7 way outflows the Stage I w/TTube. The filter has a 6 inch outlet that connects to the 6 inch inlet of the roto molded mandrel designed tube that connects the filter to the turbo. The filter itself is larger and the metal exclosure is larger becasue of the fitlers size. It also comes with a lid to keep turbo whistle and air sucking sound to a minimum, but most "diesel heads" like us leave it off so that CAN hear all the whistle etc. Call us if you have any questions we'll be glad to help you.

That is 8 hp over top of the 21 from the stage 1.

I am not sure how they label the 3rd gen stuff, but my 2nd gen has the stage 2. It is a 6" filter, and the intake plenum is more direct then the "torque tube" they advertise. I viewed them both side by side, and the stage 2 is set up much better for the money.
