Adding cone filter to stock airbox

I removed my stock plastic intake tube and replaced it with a 5 1/5" aluminum pipe. I now want to add a cone S&B filter while keeping the stock air-box. Does anybody if the S&B KF-1035 filter will fit if I add a small piece of plastic pipe that the filter will clamp too?
If not what are other ideas?
I want to keep the bottom part of the stock air box because I have the cold air dryer vent mod added to the bottom of the air box, and just want a little more turbo whistle.

first put the plastic intake tube back on and throw the aluminum pipe away next buy one of the stock 6.7 air filter boxes from some one on this site that is changing theres. transfer your dryer mod to the 6.7 box and install. make a blank plate for the 1"hole and you will need to get a 6"piece of hose to connect the 6.7 box to the oem pipe. next install a new replacement stock filter for a 6.7 and you now have the very best filter and box on the market

carl,

may i ask why you don't like the aluminum pipe idea? any reason other than heat transfer?

two reasons the stock tube is more for straightening vanes and the nylon fins in the elbow is very important straightening vanes to reduce side shear in the compressor side of turbo. the elbow ones are the most important but the silencer ring and tube do aid. the second reason as you described. towing at 65 mph stock the pyrometer will read about 1450 on 04.5 up trucks the cast iron manifold heater just loves to radiate the heat to the aluminum tube about 3" away. if you want to change any thing here replace the entire tube with a cool hose and a t.a.g.

I've been considering reinstalling my silencer ring for this very reason. Never removed the turning vanes though. I am curious though - the PSM cool hose doesn't appear to come with turning vanes... how does one add them back?

gadget that was a lot better than words, glad you found it. the t.a.g. is the replacement for the fins. the 6.7 stock tube has a improved version of the 5.9 and has foam to improve the muffler portion along with smoother and more efficient air flow and guidance. i think it will work nearly as good as the tag. when you get the new 6.7 box see if you can also get the tube and replace it all.

I wasn't planning on getting a 6.7 box. Frankly, I really like the looks (and simplicity) of the cool tube so now it along with the t.a.g. are now on my Christmas wish-list...

I went ahead and popped the silencer ring back in today. It's weird - I feel like I actually notice more of a whine now. Less of a whooshing sound. Popped the cat back in too, so perhaps with less of an exhaust note maybe the turbo is more noticeable.

Anyhow - is there anything else I should consider with my proposed setup? Stock air box w/ psm cool tube and a tag. Is the 4" drain pipe out the bottom of the airbox necessary if I'm not towing? I will probably be getting the cool hose that goes from the turbo outlet to the intercooler just cause I'll be in there and cause it's so cheap...

Oh, and jon05ctd, I hope you don't think I hijacked your thread. Figured it was all relevant discussion to what you were considering.

Personally I think the best intake, up to about 450rwhp, is a stock style filter (the OE ones for 5.9 are now as large as 6.7), with an Airaid Torque tube and the OE directional fins. It really improved my throttle responce and looking at the TT vs the stock "muffler" intake you can see how air will flow MUCH easier thru it.

Any other opinions on stock intake optimization? Trying to determine the best route for my situation. Is there any benefit to an aftermarket filter for the OEM air box? I don't plan on adding any power and am no longer interested in making noise. Just looking for the elusive, extra mpg or two

Is the TAG really necessary with the DPP cool hose? Or do they more or less just compliment each other well?

Also, any thoughts on this? Would there still be a benefit for me?

I would say yes, the directional fins in the OE elbow are said to make the turbo up to 30% more efficient.

IMHO, you can achieve the same results for less $$ with just the airaid torque tube and the stock fins.

AH,

How do you retain the stock vanes with the airaid torque tube? I remember seeing it on Geno's a while back in their closeout section and it appeared that it replaced the entire section that went from the airbox lid to turbo inlet. Is it setup that you can just pop the fins out of the stock elbow and into the airaid replacement?
