I really like my portals you dont hardly need to worry about what under you..its just point and go.....the comp guys can build burly easy to work on and find parts 60's and 9"s tho and they dont explode when the bounce all 4 tires off the ground and come done on sand stone full throttle
I'm not a comp guy so I dont know...I bet there is some lurking in the shadows here..but thats my guess...those comp guys run pretty burly engines too...some of them have the higher geared transfer cases and they still kick butt...

PS I wish I would have got those big 406's those are pretty dang sweet axles
The comp guys get away with less clearance due to;

a. The nature of the courses. Seems they are into the steeper
hill climb type course than the big rocks these days.

b. Weight, most of them are 3000 lbs or less, easy to drag a diff
at that weight.

c. Stickies. Those tires stick like glue, even if they are only 37's.
makes for some SICK lines that the rest of us could only dream about
(and makes it easier to clear a std diff).

Also As moonbuggys get lower and lower to the ground, running portals is more work to stay low because of the added height needed to clear the portals.

I've got a friend of mine that runs NO2 on his comp rig. Says it helps out on those hard to climb ledges.
