You guys ever heard of the show on BBC called TOP GEAR....well they did this really cool artic expidition with the a Toyota Hilux diesel-that they drove to the polar north pole.
The truck they did up was sweet-kinda like the 54's on the dodge.
Here's a link to the site for some sweet pictures.

I think most of the professional rock crawlers have stopped using Mog axles. I know a lot of them were breaking something in the portals (I think that's what they're called?) all the time.

Those were the 404 axle portal boxes. Have not heard anyone break a 406/416 yet.

404 box on right, 406 on left.

they can make such burly D60's now that nobody runs any protals in comps....I have never even seen any comp guys run the big mog portals..only the 404's...I got some 404's on my trail rig and love them...but if I was a comp guy I would use a burly over built D60..

That dodge is sweet..they did a great job on it

Why the 60s Mark? You cant get the clearance or the gear out of a 60 like you can a portal..... Can you?

the comp guys get low gears in their t-cases...they seem to do just fine with 25"s of ground clearance and a ford 9" with the 3rd member mounted on the far outside...they only run 37-39" tires too.
I really like my portals you dont hardly need to worry about what under you..its just point and go.....the comp guys can build burly easy to work on and find parts 60's and 9"s tho and they dont explode when the bounce all 4 tires off the ground and come done on sand stone full throttle
I'm not a comp guy so I dont know...I bet there is some lurking in the shadows here..but thats my guess...those comp guys run pretty burly engines too...some of them have the higher geared transfer cases and they still kick butt...

PS I wish I would have got those big 406's those are pretty dang sweet axles

Weight plays a huge roll for the competition guys too. Those bigger portals are just too big for a light comp rig.

Heck, even the smaller ones are heavy when used in a hybrid 60 setup.

more are even using the 60/9 combo, which is a 9inch center and d60 outers, light weight, more g.c., and a better ring and pinion set-up
