mudder500 i have seen many head bolts snapped at 160 and others strip out. i dont recommend it but i have also seen people run 60psi on the stockers but i wouldnt risk it

oh ok yea i have a buddy who wanted to torque his 12v bolts down i talked him out of that as soon as i talked to my local go to shop they said they have seen about 10 people try this 8 failed miserably 1 lasted till 45psi and blew then the other went to 60 and is still running as far as i know but 1/10 is not a good enough percent for me to try on my truck.

Yeah, we tried that, and under WOT I had coolant dripping down the front of the block/head. About 50psi boost. Once we installed the studs, no more issues. THis tells me the stock head bolts were allowing the head to lift off the block and leak from the front left passage, what would you say? BTW gasket was in perfect condition. I understand if you were just kidding, but just in case, I wouldn't want anyone to think they can get by.

Yea, but did you use the The "Garmon" sequence? Garmon and Darren Morrison both have this magical torque sequence on stock bolts and they have low 10sec trucks.

I don't know We used the circular sequence starting in the center, then going w/ 4 tq increments, then heat it up shut it down and re-tq.

bolts vs good studs thing is a joke...lol.

Those trucks are ten seconds because the weigh nothing...not becuase the hp is high.

I thinking max boost of 50-60 psi and a little nitrous is NOT that hard on a head gasket vs 85 to 100 plus psi the big hp people are running.

Hell ya jesse. We just got the head back from the machine shop It looks good! I'm also gonna be throwin some more fuel at it!

Cquestad I think your very knowledgeable and one of more knowledgeable guys on here, but saying this is pretty far out, both of Garmon and Darren are some of the top builders in the nation and there trucks are putting out some very serious HP, and both will be in the mid 9s this year.

And as far as bolts vs. studs they are a couple guys around here running s300/s480 twins with the Garmon sequence on stock bolts and holding the head down just fine and these guys are hard on there trucks. Would I do it? No, I have ARPs, but like I said a lot of guys around run it on high hp, high boost engines with no problems.

what is the hp of the 10 second trucks?

IIRC they are 700-800 hp trucks max.

I am not dissing them...period. Light is fast too!

Bingo! you nailed it. But, if you can get the airflow (lbs/min) equivalent of the 85psi into the engine at 60psi and 60psi of DP (nitrous notwithstanding) think how nice that is on the HG and the turbos.

That is what a good cam matched to a good port job and proper tuning can get you! (Of course, I know you know that, Christian; this is for the digestion of the others here).
