5" turbo-back w/ 51" Donaldson...who has it and how is it?

Well guys, I'm a lil' bored with my truck Wanting to do something different just to change it up. I've got a few lil' projects lined up for it in the up-coming weeks but nothing big. Soooooo....

Looking at going to 5" turbo-back exhaust w/ the 51" Donaldson (5" in/out of course) to just change it up. Who else has done this? How's the sound? Any drone w/ 51" Donaldson in place?

How about power...gain/loss? Significant drop in EGTs over factory 4" exhaust with 51" Donaldson like I'm running now?

Any input would be great

mine is in a single stack configuration so take it for what it's worth......I actually gained some low end when I went from straight 5" to adding the 51" Donaldson with my 5"......I love this muffler..it makes a great growl and sounds real deep...and the price is REALLY hard to beat too...

Right on! Thank ya Mark! Good info...I'm not a stack fan but I love the look of it on your truck.

Another question for ya guys....any input on brands and/or dealers to buy from?

I found the 5" turbo-back kits from DPS and ShopDiesel.com....both kits are VERY cheap compared to the more "name brand" exhaust companies. Anyone have experience with these cheaper kits versus the more expensive ones?

Thanks again!

Just remember that DPS and Shopdiesel own brand of exhaust use aluminized steel pipe and not stainless. The aluminized coating will burn off from the turbo connection down a point where the pipe doesn't get that hot and then the steel will rust. Also, aluminized pipe doesn't mean it won't rust. The seams will rust first as well as any scratched or nicked areas from installation.

I've got a Flo Pro 5" turbo back on my truck. The fit was excellant. I later had too much drone pulling the hauler so I opted for a Donaldson 51". I bought the quiter one to start with and modified that. I lost about 50 HP though so I now have the M090535 but have yet to put it on. The current Donaldson M100465 has no drone at all but has a really good sound and you can really hear the turbo through it as with my Flo Pro muffler on there I couldn't but the drone was horrible. I hope to get back the lost HP/TQ, keep the sound and not have any drone. We'll see shortly.

WOW, was that the donaldson with the baffle or something? Hard to believe that much restriction?

That was the Donaldson with the baffle and cone. I machined the cones out and punched the baffle but it still was a big enough restriction over the straight though Flo Pro to cause that much loss. I thought I would have lost on top a little but gained some TQ in the mid but it reacted totally different and lost most on the bottom and mid and not as much on top. I hope to get the 535 on there soon and do some more runs to see if the power comes back. I probably wouldn't have even minded except that I tow right at 70 MPH which is where it lost the most. Go figure.

I've got the ShopDiesel 5" turbo-back kit on mine. It is aluminized and some of the hangers needed some "persuasion". But, I guess that's what you get with a cheaper kit. Would I buyt it again, depends on the amount of extra $$$ available. If I had the extra $$$ for a different kit, I would probably go for a stainless one.

Were the hangers the only real fitment issues? How's the sound? Is it already trying to rust away?

Overall satisfied though with the $$$ spent...I mean, $310 for the kit w/ no muffler is pretty awesome...but you get what you pay for!

Sorry for the questions...
