5.9 w/ 4 speed vs. 6.7 w/ 6 speed
I'm going to get an 2007 Ram 2500 and I'm trying to figure out which truck is the best choice. Which is the best choice? This will be my first diesel so I want to make sure I pick the right drivetrain.

When I bought mine 2 weeks ago they told me that I would be better off with the 5.9 because they are suposed to run on both run on both kinds of diesel. where the 6.7 will only run on the new fuel and some of the stations might take awhile to make the change.
This was the first time I have heard about the fuel issue, Unless the dealer just wanted to get the one i got off the lot. I dont really know.
Maybe someone else could let you know about this before I lie to ya. I would like to know aswell.

depends on what you want to do with it. if you plan to mod it there are alot of mods on the market for the 5.9, with the 6.7 I dont think there is that much available for it yet. the 6.7 doesnt appeal to me because of all the dumb emissions on it. but thats my opinion. the 48re auto is not a bad tranny. they are way better than the 2nd gen auto.

And as to the fuel issue, the 5.9 burns anything, the 6.7 should only have ULS diesel and if you travel a lot Mexico dosen't have much available, and maybe some other places also. State wide most have the ULS but some are still running the 500 PPM diesel or higher in their pumps and if so it can damage the Particulate filter.

And you might get a good deal on it since they are trying to clear the 5.9s off the lots... Look at the build dates on them they certainly stocked up on them... I'm assuming to fill contract requirements with the motors or in anticipation of problems with the new emissions trucks.
Also, FWIW i told the service guy i was going to put a cat back on my truck and he didn't know it was a 5.9 and said I couldn't since they wouldn't allow it on the new diesel... i said it was a 5.9 and he was like yeah, that's ok.
