Is 5-7 mpg normal with this load?

[QUOTE=whitebuffalo;1702688]i get around 10ish with my GN and ~12K in tow and its not near the poor aero of that. sounds about right, depending on how hard the driver was hammering it.

You are missing the point of this: would not hit more than 65MPH. The fuel economy is one thing. Not that far off from what I get (7-8MPG), it is the fact that it would not hit more than 65MPH is what I am taking about

It's just me, but if that load weighs as much as it's rumored it does, I wouldn't WANT to pull it faster than 65. But the truck should have been able to pull it faster than that if that's what the driver wanted.
Went on a trip from here in Ohio to Sumner, Texas this spring with my brother and his buddy in a bone stock 04 2500 regular cab Ram 4x4 with the 6-spd manual trans and 3.73's. 1080 miles one way. Drug back some trailers for a local trailer dealer. Bottom trailer was a 32 ft tri-axle GN. Stacked on that was a 25ft tandem-axle GN with two 12ft tandem axle tag-a-long dump trailers on that. Total trailer weight according to shipping papers was 21,780lbs. Got 9-10 mpg, though not as much drag as you. I woke up several times to see the kid running 80mph with pedal to spare! After calmly explaining to him that I'd throw him out the window of his own truck, he backed 'er down to 60 and I went back to sleep.
Afraid I'd be looking for a possable problem with the truck. Maybe a hole in a boost tube or a slipping trans. Good luck!

This is probably the last time my truck will haul that load, he is talking about getting a semi truck since they get 8 mpg and will haul the load. I will talk to him today when he returns my truck and get more info, I do have a Commander and we talked alot about max numbers on everything before he left. He did say once that the truck was running good and running strong whatever that means, and I will check out the stuff you guys suggested too. I have a 7 micron filter that has 10K on it and had a spare that I sent with him too.

I've gotten 7.9mpg at 100mph grossing 38,000 on flat ground (not a tall load)no i did'nt do it for long but i'd say your problem is the drag of the load,i normally see 13.3 empty (18.500)at 72/75

Truck has never been flashed and I posted a couple of weeks ago about my truck pinging with the XZT on. The guy told me before he left Ca that he would have to put the XZT on 0 as he could not get it to stop pinging either and that was before he put a load on it.
Why the pinging?

I guess. 100 MPH EMPTY on public road around here is insane. Grossing at 38K and 100 MPH is just down right stupid. Hey, out in the middle of nowhere, and you want to kill yourself, great, by all means, do it. If you are doing that with people on teh road, then you have no business on it. I can imagine the stopping distance would have to resemble a freight train. Hey, like I said, if no one is around great, whatever. I jsut don't see public highways not having traffic on them and I have been to 44 of our states with my truck hauling. The only stretch I have seen empty that could you even attempt something like that is west of San Antonio between El Paso on 10.
